QX6700...High Temps

I've been cooling my QX6700 with a Titan Amanda. Having read some reviews of the Titan (mainly american forums which slate them), I have to say I'm pleasently suprised.

Running the QX @ 3.4ghz with 1.35v i'm getting IDLE temps of 40-43 and LOAD (4 instances of PRIME) 66-68. Any more volts, even 0.25v resulted in a higher overclock (3.46ghz), but the temps hit mid 70's under LOAD, which doesnt really appeal to me! The heat also caused the PRIME sessions to die pretty quickly and 3dMark06 bombs out during the first CPU test.

Sweet spot on this chip under the Titan is 3.2ghz with 1.275v, IDLE temps of 40, LOAD 56-60 (Prime after 43 minutes before I got bored of watching it!)

That's some good temps  mine tops out at 70 under load, i'm still slightly worried about the idle temps though :(

I'm not too concerned about the IDLE temps really. The projected life of a processor is approc 7 years, and additional volts and temperature effect the life. Personally, I wont keep this processor for 7 years, so the heat can errode it life as much as it wants! Plus, retail product, if the heat does kill it, I'll just send it back and get a new one!

I think the max temp theyll take before dying is 100 degrees, so we're safe with the temps we're getting mate.

BTW - UTD for the Premiership ! We showed those Chelsea scums last season...! :)

I'm using an Akasa EVO AK 920-2 120. BIOS reports those temperatures, PC Probe 2 also. Using TAT it suggests mid 40's when doing basic tasks but even so, it is clearly being cooled well.

Most people seem to be going by TAT nowadays when comparing temperatures (including me) and it reads hotter (aswell as coretemp) then pretty much everything else. And as you state in your post there is a pretty big difference between 35c and "mid 40s" ;)

With all 4 cores fully loaded 24/7 on my QX6700, core temps top out about 66C with a Freezer 7 Pro at stock.

These things run hot even at stock, you just can't get away from it, unless you use water cooling. It's within spec though, nowhere near throttling, so don't worry about it, it will go for years like that. If you add extra volts and clock speed and it gets very hot, then that is a different matter...

LOL in the BIOS mine Idles at 28 ! Never take the BIOS temps as the correct temps, and the same with PC Probe. Using TAT/coretemp, it appears, on air cooling, we're all pretty similiar with Idle temps ! ;)

Ive just purchased the Q6600 and I have mine on an Asus P5BDeluxe motherboard and I am using the Asus Silent Square heatsink and fan. The temps idle on mine at the moment are 50 to 54oC and when running Orthos it goes to a maximum of 72oC.

Is this safe of is there something wrong???

I have reseated the heatsink and fan several times and checked to see if anything needs lapping and all looks fine. I have also used Artic Silver 5 as my thermal paste and it still doesnt make a difference...

For love nor money can I get this temperature down lower that 50oC

Any help is much appreciated

Thanks

I don't think there is anything wrong with the laod temp, these chips run hot... remember there are effectively two Core 2 Duos sitting under that heatspreader

As for the idle temp - now potentially that should be lower, with the right BIOS options set for power saving on the processor, can't remember the exact names for them, something like speedstep and C1E maybe

LOL, dont worry ! Youre not experiencing anything we arn't! Quad cores produce a lot of heat. Its not a dangerous temp you're reporting, it's just that you're not used to seeing these temps.

Welcome to quad core heat! :)

LOL, yes quite right

People have got used to seeing low temps with the Core2 Duo and are usually a bit shocked with seeing the quad core temps.

It's worth remembering that the CPU will throttle when it gets too hot, so there is not a lot to worry about. At 72C core temp there is certainly still headroom before that starts to happen

**** me there's some warm Quads doing the rounds.

Here's mine at stock under water (1.275v in BIOS)-

Idle-

And Prime95 load-

LOL, they are warm.

I notice these temps are @ 2.66ghz. What temps do you get @ 3.3-3.4ghz? Would you mind trying for me please? I'm really interested!

And in return I'll do some screenshote at 1.275 @ 2.66ghz under air - so we can compare!

Cheers fella!

2.66ghz @ 1.275 Idle

Nows heres a suprise...

3.2ghz @ 1.35v IDLE

3.2ghz @ 1.35 LOAD

3200LOAD.jpg

Not much difference in the temps under LOAD, but youre chucking 1.5v through yours !!! I wouldnt even dare put those volts through mine on air...Its would get into Windows because of the heat!

Thanks for doing that mate, give those who dont have Quads something to compare and think about...
