ATi R600 Card Re-Design In Progress

A re-design for R600 card and cooling is currently underway to make it shorter and better cooled. The original R600 card design is 12 inches long and ATi is probably trying to shorten it to at least 8800GTX length. The Inquirer has recently reported ATI has already produced some first R600 cards that are clocked lower to send out to game developers for debugging and optimizing their games for R600. The R600 card we seen will conform to the new PCI-SIG graphics spec of delivering 225/300W power for high-end graphics cards. Therefore it will have a new 2x4 pin connector for additional power on top of the current 6-pin connector.

Anyone care to explain what this means  . Is it gona require 2 molexes and 1 6pin PCIe connector or is the 2x4 pin "special" and would mean we have to purchase new PSU that has these pins?

Look at the 8800GTX reference boards, they all have a space for a 8 pin double decker molex socket. They fitted a 6 pin PCI-e instead and left the 2 spare pinholes. So yes it could be a PCI-e and two molex's. Two molex gives similar current capacity to one PCI-e

Who cares? lol. :p This generation is starting off as a joke, best off waiting for refreshes. :)

But the refreshes of the refreshes will be better
It isn't a joke in any form what so ever, if it was, why have so many people bought into it?

How much power?

This is just getting a bit silly. First the 8800GTX needs 30A (30!!!) on the 12V rails and now this...?

And just think: not two months ago, Gibbo was lambasting those separate graphics subsystem power supplies... bring on clever core design as opposed to brute force, I say!

Still, the late R600 means that the 8800GTX owners will have done very well for themselves in terms of sheer power/durability: nobody's coming close to the 8800GTX for a long time yet.

300W

Better be quick, I'd say it would have to be another 1/3 as quick as the G80 :D

Sucks to be poor ey? ;)

Whine whine..
What is this obsession people here have that if you don't want something you must be poor or jealous? I'm guessing you're about twelve years old or something to come out with that moronic statement.

My X1900XT cuts through everything, and will easily last me until the G80/R600 refreshes which will hopefully be smaller and more powerful. If they're not then I won't bother upgrading as it won't be worth it.

It's not my fault I'm unimpressed with the 8800GTX (would rather get a 7950GX2 if I was spending that much, but like I said, my Core 2 Duo and X1900XT cuts through everything so I don't even need to consider upgrading until this time next year.)

This new gen is only a joke when you can't afford it, lets be honest most on these forums complaining would buy one if they could.

Lol, yeh the reason why everyone who's not buying a 8800 is because they can't afford it

People need to realise that not everyone are not obsessed with their pc's. I could easily afford one, the same as I could easily afford a core2duo and a 24" tft but I havn't. Why? because I don't feel the need to. When I'm unhappy at the performance of my pc I upgrade. I dont feel the need to be at the cutting edge of hardware so I can wave my e-penis all over forums(not saying thats why all people upgrade, but that is the reason for quite a few), its got nothing to do with being able to afford to.
Some people really need to get a life
