How are you measuring the temp?

79C after an hours gaming on air cooling is absolutely fine for Ryzen 7 3800X. As mentioned above, you might be able to improve on that by optimising the airflow in the case but I seriously doubt that that CPU defect is having any impact at all.

Found this after removing and cleaning up with a stock Wraith Prism cooler from a PC Specialist build. How much of a hit will this have on cpu temps?

One thing I can tell you for sure, that CPU's warranty is no longer! I just RMA'd a cpu back to AMD and they won't warranty a processor with IHS damage :(

Thank you all again for your comments. I agree now that there is no point messing around with this CPU. I have another undamaged one running in the exact same setup and the temps are almost exactly the same. I knew I would not have a leg to stand on with warranty. I will just make sure I use plenty of thermal paste!

Don’t use too much as this can cause issues as well.

I had a friend years ago build a pc and used so much thermal paste it stopped the system booting properly! Cleaned it all up and was fine.

just apply a little more to fill in the indent

If in doubt, contact the supplier. Check the system warranty for changing the CPU cooler though - as I'd presume this will have consequences with a pre-build warranty.
