R9 290X Owners Thread

Anyone here wishes they'd bought a 290 instead of a 290X?

Not likely

Here's one I just done on my 290Xs for the red team

4 x 290Xs @1200/1600

4930k @4.8

Who said AMD cards are no good on this bench:D

I wish these guys would run tests in a closed case. How many people (miners excepted) are going to run these on open bench test rigs?

I must say, the MSI is very tempting. HIS and Powercolor must be kicking themselves that they still don't have a product ready while their competitors sell all they can make.

Not a chance! You might not need all the extra headroom now but sooner or later you will and it's aways good to have.

I'm not so sure. The cards are so close in terms of performance, I can't really see a situation where the 290 would be struggling to the point an upgrade is needed, yet the 290x would not.

How are the custom 290X's 10 FPS more than the reference one/780Ti?

for a start the Refrence 290X has a very inefficient cooler, it gets to hot and throttles.

The Custom cards have much better coolers so they don't throttle, they actually run about ~30c cooler than the reference ones. the MSI Gaming also has a 4% overclock.

Yeah in the majority of reviews reference 290 cards will be throttling so they'll be missing performance. That will show up when you see AIB cards thrown into the mix keeping lower temps.

But I thought the 780Ti was equal/better than the 290X? Is BF4 just heavily ATI favoured?

I think it swaps and changes, but at the end of the day DICE are AMD Partners.

When all is done AMD are bound to end up with the lead, even without Mantle, they will make sure of it, BF4 is AMD's big billboard.

Hi folks, sorry for the noobie type question but I don't want to fry my card before I've played with it.

My previous card (a 7850) just had the 1, 6 pin PCI-E connector.

This new card has a socket for a 6 pin PCI-E connector and an 8 pin connector at the side of it. I take it both are required? My PSU (Corsair 750) doesn't have an 8 pin connector so is that what the adaptor is for in the box? - it is 8 pin and split down into 2 of the molex type connectors. The manual is not particularly clear and seems to give a few options so I want to be 100% sure as it's an expensive bit of kit!

The new card is a Sapphire R9 290 X

Cheers

Use a 6+2 for the 8 pin and a 6 pin for the 6.
