R9 290X Owners Thread

I did run 3dMark 11 earlier today and the pc crashed with a blue screen 3 times in succession at exactly the same point in the benchmark. Which was when the small screen comes on with those pillars all falling down etc.

This normally means an unstable CPU/RAM overclock.

GPUs play very part in this part of the bench (Physics test) and are very unlikely to cause a problem.

EK Readies New Full-Cover Water Block for Radeon R9 290X Graphics Cards

EK Water Blocks, Ljubljana based premium water cooling gear manufacturer, is about to release a new Full-Cover water block for TUL Corporation's (Power Color, Club3D and VTX3D) AMD Radeon R9 290(X) graphics cards with amended circuit board design R29FA.

EK-FC R9-290X SE directly cools the GPU, RAM as well as VRM (voltage regulation module) as water flows directly over these critical areas thus allowing the graphics card and its VRM to remain stable under high overclocks. This water block also features a very high flow design therefore it can be easily used in liquid cooling systems using weaker water pumps.

Base is made of nickel-plated electrolytic copper while the top is made of quality cast POM Acetal. Screw-in brass standoffs are pre-installed and allow for safe installation procedure. The cooling engine uses refined 0.6 mm wide microchannel structure to even further improve the heat transfer while not sacrificing the famous low hydraulic restriction design.

Up to four EK-FC R9-290X SE water blocks can be interconnected with EK-FC Terminal which allows for hassle-free piping job. Moreover this water block perfectly lines up with EK-FC R9-290X series water block for AMD reference design circuit board Radeon R9 290(X) graphics card thus allowing different model graphics cards to be used at the same time.

In order to simplify the search for suitable and compatible water block EK is adding newly released graphics cards and motherboard from various manufacturers to EK Cooling Configurator database and compatible graphics cards are being added to the list on daily basis.

The product will be available for purchase through EK Webshop and Partner Reseller Network by the end of July 2014. An aesthetic retention backplate will also be available.

Welcome to the dark side mrk.

You have done well Lord Matt.

Meanwhile Darth Kaap is pleased that he uses GPUTweak to get some decent volts into what ever needs overclocking.

Kaap any way to extend the overclocking limits that you know of in gpu-tweak? Default voltage is 1.225v and i can max out the core and memory with only 1.3v at 1320/1800. I can only imagine what 1.5v might do...

I don't know, I bought Asus cards as I knew by default they could do more than 1.4 with GPUTweak.

Got my prize today from ocUk/AMD, the simply stunning Asus Radeon R9 290X DirectCU II OC.

SusanDPD lady (pretty;)) arrived on time and the toys are now sitting proud waiting to take a pounding tomorrow from the wee man.:D

Also threw in the Superflower 1300w and it is a beast of a psu.

I didn't take any card shots, but I should have, it's a very, very high quality piece of kit, it is solidly built(better than MSI/Gbyte etc), the back plate is simply gorgeous, I should add that the cooler is very wide too, and it's just shorter than my 32cm Xtreme.

The cooler-it's going to be very well up for the task, as it ramps up well to keep temps in check.

If you are used to AIB custom cooled gpu's then noise/temps won't be an issue this ones a cracker(only read the spoiler if you are like me-Anal about fan noise):)

My only gripe is I'm anal about fan noise, as above, I only use AC Xtremes on my gpu's, the DCUII OC for my ears unfortunately isn't happening, so the cooler is getting ripped off and I'll put my other Xtreme on and that'l be me sorted:D

Yet another thanks goes out to 5UB/ocUk and Warsam/AMD for giving me another 290X that's enabling tommy a CrossFire setup for a grand total of £324.:D:D:D:D

Very nice and on the Roll of Honour (twice!!!).:)

Will we be seeing any benches.:)

I'm asking cause I have the same card and it showed artifacts on bf3,4 heaven valley etc.
the problem was overheating of the vrms and the core itself.
I thought that the card was faulty but then I replaced the vrm thermal pad and
lapped that awful surface of the heatsink and the result is better than expected:)

can I join the club?

On the Roll of Honour and welcome to the club.:)

Just wondering if you guys thought 1200/1680 was a good overclock for a 290X with +200mV and +20% PL?

Also, whenever I go above this (1220), it won't artifact, but performs no better than it does at 1200, how come?

Thanks!

It could be the overclock on the VRAM is too high.

Ok, should I put the VRAM frequency back down to stock and try it again?

Try 1200/6400 and run 3dmark firestrike then write down what graphics score you get.

Then up the clocks to 1200/6500 and run firestrike again and record the graphics score.

Keep doing this, adding 100mhz to the VRAM until the score starts to go down or the bench won't run.

You probably won't be able to leave the core at stock and just overclock the VRAM, you need to do both together like in the examples above.
