R9 290X Owners Thread

Don't worry I will be starting a new thread to post my thoughts, pics, benchmarks, temps etc etc. Thoroughly impressed with how they look and sound though. No word of a lie, 100% on the DD cooler is the reference cooler on 25%. Infact it might even be 20%.
That is ace! Particularly the sound (or lack of) that cooler!

I look forward to what you find! :)

I have a Corsair 540 as well and have found it exceptional but started to worry about 290/290x multi GPU setups after people began describing horror stories with anything other than blowers or watercooling. Never had any issues with dual GTX 470's though so more than likely it's a little overblown sometimes.

Absolutely agree with mrk though... am super jealous and very impressed! It's a lovely rig!

You going x99 Matt or staying with x79?

My 5930k and x99 deluxe will be here tomorrow, be interesting to see how our cards perform against each other on two different platforms :)

Nice!

Don't think I'd ever buy an XFX card again, but if I was given them it'd be a different story!

Was it Gibbo that said they weren't really good at overclocking?

I remember not too long ago when LtMatt was swearing by reference coolers for Crossfire setups and commenting on how quiet the reference cooler was. How things change when you get freebies! :)

I will let you know on the vrm front soon as I'm about to play some games now. Did a little bit of benching, sadly the cards all have Elpida ram. However I've managed to post a decent 3 card Firestrike score which i will post shortly. More to follow. :)

I'm not a fan of the looks. Looks pretty basic really, much like the DD cooler on the 7000 series cards but with rounded corners and a better colour scheme.
Looks like a plain box with 2 fan holes really.

It's definitely not ugly, just a bit plain looking imo.

I'm also not a fan of the Twin Frozr cooler either, although it's not dull.
Don't like the Windforce cooler either, but I think it look better than some and better than the 600/7000 series version.
I like the look of the Asus DirectCU II cooler, but understand it doesn't perform the best.
Largely indifferent about the Powercolour PCS+ cooler either. Again it looks a bit boxy, but not too bad.
The Tri-X and Vapor-X coolers are the ones I like the best.
The reference coolers look a bit cheap and blower coolers sort of have to be a little boxy to work.

VRM temps are a non issue, however the top cards overheats as i have no side fans. If this was in dual gpu crossfire it would be less of an issue, but with three cards it is a problem. I will either have to game with the side of the case off, or apply the reference coolers to the cards. Thankfully the card is stupidly quiet at 100% fan speed.

Do the cards still overheat with 100% fan speed?
If so surely it doesn't matter what speed you run it.

You know the solution, it's the same solution people have been suggesting since you went Tri-fire... WATERCOOLING!
The XFX cards are reference PCBs aren't they?
Sell a couple R9 290s to fund it, give the remaining 290 to the missus, jobs a goodun!

If one or two cards in the system, no. If i have three in the system with the side on, the top card does. Undecided what I'm going to do yet, will wait and see. I'm not sure I'll sell any cards, i have a feeling i might end up becoming a collector like Kaaps.

Yeah, I collect computer hardware too, but mostly because I'm too lazy to sell it. Well, mostly just to lazy to package and ship it!

To become a collector you need to buy one of those other GPU's.

They might be a lot of fun :D

you could strap a 120mm fan to the side of the top/middle one

increasing air, seen this done & works very well

considering...... 290x's now
