R9 290X Owners Thread

Do these seem correct? (well, the CFX rather than the single!)

Single:

Also thinking of cooling these - havnt decided yet, waters an option but, I wouldnt have a clue where to start (would also need a new case) - or theres rumors the Accelero Xtreme III fits, which would work.

Yes CF is working fine, compare the graphics scores on 3dmark firestrike and two cards are scoring nearly double.

LT called it Mr Zed. :)

Now get benching. :D

Get that hanky out again

Just tried my other two cards, still more in the tank

These are my other two cards having a run, could have got more if I had overclocked my CPU a bit more.

Score 19437

AMD Radeon R9 290X(2x) @1185/1600

Intel Core i7-3970X Extreme Edition Processor @4.8

Graphics Score 24745

Physics Score 17438

Combined Score 7977

On NVidia's home ground

Single R9 290X @1200/1600

Think some work needs to be done on the scaling. :)

Here is a fun one

Long ago before these cards launched I predicted to Humbug that @1200/1350 the card would score 1523. Humbug said just under 1500, I think 1497 to be exact.

This is what the card actually can do at 1200/1350

I was only 7 points out on my prediction.:D

Nice. Puts it a chunk behind 780/Titan in this particular benchmark.

Does the Unigine benchmarks actually favour NVIDIA cards? Or is that just is said becuase they're faster? It's interesting because in Heaven 3.0 the 7970s were a good bit ahead and the reverse argument was said at that point in time.

I actually think the Unigine benches favour AMD when it comes to comparing GK104 with Tahiti. When it comes to the GK110 it is a different story, these chips do seem to handle tessellation very well.

@Kaaps.

Now you've had a good play (with your cards), what's your opinion?

Single card, performance top notch

CF needs work, good performance in some things, very poor in others. I hope this improves for when I have all 4 going at the same time.

GPU Tweak is as crap as ever. One thing to watch out for is if you set your fans to 100% in GPU Tweak, go into CCC and make sure they are at 100% there too.

The cards don't really run that hot, the problem is the coolers are loud at high speed, nothing watercooling won't cure.

If the cards are allowed to run at stock they are not that loud.

Unless you have a case with very good air flow, don't buy more than one non ref card, they are like the Matrix Platinums and use/produce a lot of volts/heat.

For the money they are very good bang for buck.

Sounds like a driver bug with the 2d/3d profiles forcing the card to go into UVD mode. Copy my afterburner settings. You want to make sure you have enable unofficial overclocking selected without powerplay support. Does this fix the problem?

Does afterburner support unlocked volts yet.

Thanks for the GPUZ shots, the overclocked 290X has a massive Pixel fillrate advantage over an overclocked 780, but the 780 has much higher Texture fillrate, I guess this offset causes similar performance overall with both cards clocked. Would like to see what kind of scores a 1200mhz+ core 290X can get..

The thing about these sort of specs is just because a card is capable of them does not mean the workload will need them.

It is a bit like a Titan having 6gb of vram, @1080p it will only use a fraction of it.
