Race report: 'UK not deliberately rigged against ethnic minorities'

his boss did say it properly at first he said, maybe he was just saying it wrong after that as a friendly sort of jokey nick name and then he saw it annoyed you so he kept pushing that button as he thought it was funny as he meant no real offence and just bringing you into the team?
I bet he winds everyone else up too, You've just been scarred with bad experiences in you life?

I worked there for 3 years and hI never heard him mispronounce anyone else's name on purpose.

Names aren't language? Most names mean something else in another language don't they?

Shaun as a boy's name is of Irish and Hebrew origin, and the meaning of Shaun is "God is gracious".

now I know lol

I meant you don't need to understand or learn a whole language to correctly say people's names, especially in cases where the individual syllables already are English words.

Jesus, the usual mob are out.

For anyone who isn’t a massive **** and needs it spelt out to them:
the chap has an unusual name. The boss may have not been aware how to pronounce it. However at some point they could pronounce it with no issue. For some reason, the boss then decided to start pronouncing it wrong to belittle/annoy/bully/etc the poster.
For you all to try and justify this is ludicrous. The fact is the boss was at a time pronouncing the name correctly. They then stopped this and began insulting the chap.

The boss is an ass, and sounds like a textbook racist. Why else would they start to wrongly pronounce the chaps name and belittle him based on that?

The boss has probably felt emboldened because so many racists are able to be racists without it being shut down.

Or as I've said you don't just instantly think racist? what if he's treating him as just one of the guys and just busting his balls a little like most guys do to each other?
but then again maybe he is a big devil racist and should be sacked, how did the boss's boss's not see this in him? If it has gone further than just teasing about his name one time and the boss saw his reaction thinking it was silly then just kept pushing his buttons then yeah I could see it.
How can we have equality if we can't equally wind each other up?
Dunno it's nearly 3am nighty night

I fell asleep on the couch earlier so now can’t sleep!

I’m somewhat assuming the OP has corrected the boss. However, I understand a ribbing but I don’t think many would go down tbe route of ribbing someone based on their name and of a different race. Even if they aren’t a racist, it’s a stupid thing to do and could easily lead to disciplinary. Stick to football teams, the dodgy tie or the awful jokes at the Christmas party. Don’t rib someone based on their character, their name, colour, heritage, physical appearance.

Also, not all guys do that. My current workplace is quite refreshing that my boss or no one else in my team belittles anyone else, even in a light hearted way (I’m very happy I’m no longer in a male dominated office in Glasgow where the only thing anyone could talk about is football).
We go to work, do our job, laugh about things without belittling others and go home (or shut the laptop as is the case atm!)

It could all have been nothing and they could have became friends If ballsticks would have just stood up for himself and said to his face NO that's not my bloomin name and you know it so stop it and gave a slur back to him, he would have earned the groups respect that way.
yeah he shouldn't have to but that's how males work with each other.

Yeah that's the worst and my enthusiasim (sp) sinks as soon as you speak to someone new and they ask what team do you support, i'm oh ffs here we go again.
It's not all guys, but it's the guys who have had a fathers upbringing and not been molly coddled in life I think. rabbling now.

Or I would have been sacked if I said anything back to my manager. I do wonder why this behaviour is only prevalent among white males in the workplace. Never happens from any female or non white male, and this wasn't the only time its happened either.

Let me guess, you're the type of person like one guy who told me never to go to a pub or I would get killed for replying 'I don't watch nor am interested in any sports'.

I would take a comment like that straight to the nice ladies in HR if it happened today, and it may be illegal under 'glorification of violence' or some such.

Also I've had similar questions asked very often usually from Asian males about cricket. Telling them the same reply never leads to a follow up with the word 'kill' in the reply. Usually any such person just keeps blathering on and on about about whichever sport it is, at which point I would now simply passive aggressively remove my hearing aids in front of them then proceed to ignore anything else they say.

Well you're both doing it wrong. You should claim racism and use the classic Schwarzenegger defence. People can't pronounce Arnolds name correctly because he is world famous, its because he is white and all white people know how to pronounce all other white peoples names. Ignore the fact that a lot of white people have their name constantly mispronounced and refuse to believe its usually a completely innocent mistake and assume the worst.
I used to work for a Japanese company. We found the mispronunciations to be quite endearing and a constant source of entertainment to be honest. Bless them :D

But yeah there are genuine problems with pronouncing stuff and there's being an a-hole. I suspect if the latter is going on to the point of bullying then you should just be assertive and pull them up on it rather than let it stew. Or just adopt a nickname.

Once people know it's genuinely annoying you they tend to back off. Unless they are dicks in which case I'd consider working somewhere that isn't staffed by idiots. Ugh, I'm now reminded of working on building sites in the 90s where people were absolutely merciless.

You should start mis pronouncing their name back to them. Maybe it's banter and they're trying to **** test you to see how you respond (Yes males do this quite a lot and it's a way of finding out a bit about you), or it's genuinely malicious. In which case either take it up with them personally or take it to their boss if you feel that strongly about it.

Personally I've never had it or seen it happen from non white males, and literally not one other co worker supports or likes them talking that way. I also never saw the people saying such things to me ever talking that way to anyone else.

I guess I could put it down as 'Chauvinistic toxic masculinity' or some such modern day buzzwords - 'Why do men?'

Start calling everyone Dave.

I was also working with a white co worker that was far more offended by it than I was and that actually told him off for saying my name how he was doing.

was you’re co worker sacked for telling the manager off?

Now imagine if Jennifer was black and you had thought her name was and repeatedly called her 'Shanaynay', and then you have a racism.
No, you’ve still got a throbber of a work mate who got the name wrong of a girl he had the hots for. No that’s grounds for ripping the pee outta him and start calling him weird names lol

Because women do it when said person isn't there and says it to the rest of her little group, Men will say it to the persons face? sort of thing?
