Racing Simulators

How well does iRacing work with the lower end wheels? I'd like to give it a go but at the moment I only have an X360 wheel.

Think it should work perfectly fine, with a ton of options to suit your needs and rotations and all that (for wheels that are 900 degree), but alas i couldnt say for sure ive only ever used my G25 with IRacing.

Why is it pay monthly for iRacing? I would play it if it was a one off but far too much money for me personally.

Is it just disguised DLC? :p

I haven't played iRacing but I only hear good things. Im not paying monthly though.
I have netKar. Great sim game, cheap, but nobody plays it.

Some of the mods for rFactor maybe worth a look. I used to play one of the F1 mods a lot with some of the guys on here.

The subscription model is based around ongoing on-line competition in leagues, it is not really an offline single-player game. As such I see it a just a racing MMO and no different to the subscription model in games like World of Warcraft.

Though I like the simulation I don't do much on-line racing so I let my subscription lapse.

I think any sim racer has to at least experience it for a while. The cheap 3 month deal for new members is a good way to go, because it takes quite a while to settle into the iRacing "my way or the highway" scheme of things.

And to understand the interface, which I still think is an abomination, especially for new members. I am in a minority though, probably on all iRacing-related matters. :-)

There's no doubt to me that iRacing represents the state of the art for current sim racing. It's almost worth it just for testing on your own. But it also represents the most frustrating sim racing experience know to mankind at times. I gave up after 2+ years because I started to feel like I was on a treadmill, and an expensive one at that (compared to other sims, not the expensive real world hobbies often cited as a good comparison).

I'd start paying again in a flash if they added either AI (so I could race whenever I want, wherever I want, in whatever car I want) or the Nordschleife, but neither are going to happen in my lifetime.

I'm an old git though. Younger people will have a better chance of seeing this project turn into something more flexible and fun. Though if you can race at peak times (UK evening for Europe) and don't mind coughing up a decent chunk to buy access to a variety of races and less time sat around waiting, you'll probably find it plenty of fun, and more than flexible enough for you.

Try it, the worst thing that happens is you like it, and there are worse things to waste your wages on. I just decided that paying to be a permanent backmarker in underpopulated, off-peak racing wasn't worth it. No doubt if I was a better driver I'd have found more satisfaction though, so that's why I always say everyone should try iRacing. For some people it will definitely be sim heaven.

Since giving up iRacing I've revisited all my old titles, but I have to say that nothing, so far, can lure me away from GT5 (not even NKPro). I've done more laps of the Nordschliefe in the last month than I've done in the past ten years, and in the right car is is an absolutely amazing experience, matching any sim-satisfaction I've ever found on the PC.

If only the same could be said for the rest of GT5. Whoever designed the overall gameplay needs their head examining. And the AI is slower than evolution. In a practice race with my rumbling beast of an upgraded (999HP!) Dodge Viper this morning I had to give them a 3 minute head start to make life interesting.

I guess now I know how the people beating me on iRacing felt. ;-)

If more people played NKPro it would be great. On the few races I've had it's been amazing. Its just a shame all the servers are empty. Last I heard the community were looking at creating more tracks. Monza was the last one done I believe.

The best online racing experience I had was on rFactor, At least 6 of us from these forums would race on a regular basis. It was immense fun. Problem these days is you can't jump on and race. You have to join a league or something because the populated servers are locked.

I'll probably get a 3 month Sub just to experience it.

If anyone else fancies some races on either NKPro or rFactor I'm always up for a few. :)

I'll have to take you up on this in a few weeks when I've got my G25 set up again! (+ spent a couple of days getting back up to some sort of speed lol)

(I'm in the midst of a re-decoration mission at the moment!)

Anyone know where I might find Race On? There's no stock anywhere and Steam is £24.

A local store here has a three-pack consisting of Dirt 1, Fuel, and Grid 1. Any good for a tenner?

None of them are remotely sim-like though. All fairly arcadey in handling & afaik Dirt 1 doesn't run in Windows 7.

Would be worth it if you didn't mind the handling & were running XP I suppose.

You just seem to get more variety of cars in the gtr evolution pack.

You defiinately do. The Radicals are great fun on some of the tracks.

Downside to GTR Evo is the cost, as it's hard to find by these days & seems to sell for £12-£15.

Best chance might be the bargain / clearance section of some high street game shops ?

One minor point about GTR Evo ( and Race On as well I imagine ) which might bug you, or it might not. The cockpit view doesn't receive dynamic shadows from trackside objects, bridges or trees.
