Racing Simulators

NFS: shift is barely even worth calling a game let alone a sim, feels like pushing a knob of butter around a frying pan, worst driving game I ever played, including "big red racing"!

Lightweight! When Spa came out and I was about to hit the buy button I realised I'd already spent over £750 at iRacing, and that only included one whole year's subscription and several shorter periods. The drip, drip, drip of content is torture for your credit card, especially back in the beginning when things were more expensive, and especailly if you're a bit weak willed, like ovals as well, and got lured into buying a lot of content for the Fun races. :-)

The silly thing is that outside iRacing I'm very capable of restraining my spending. I think that was when I finally decided I had to give it up. The quality of the racing in the UK mornings is pretty hit & miss anyway, with few splits outside the Rookie races. So I'm not missing much.

I do miss the forums though. It's such a mad mixture of ultra hardcore sim-freaks as well as normal folk looking for fun that there's always an entertaining clash waiting to happen.

It's also fun watching the iRacing staff trying to keep a lid on the unrealistic expectations of the community (encouraged by unrealistic claims by the iRacing website). Personally I think they should save a lot of money and sack everyone who isn't programming, scanning, or Nim. :-)

Andrew McP... spending the rest of February learning Trento bondone in NKPro

Thankfully I managed to group together a good chunk of my content, even with most of it before the price-drop, still painful to think about though :p

It's a shame you've left, your threads in the England forum were always amusing :)

It's comments like that which remind me how glad I am to have escaped. Most of the membership -- now and forever -- will never race a real car in their lives other than in their wet dreams, which is just as well based on what I've seen while there. :-)

True, but he does have a point, I race motorbikes and budget £500 for a weekend, sometimes it's less than that, other times it's more (at Snetterton last year I finished off a rear tyre earlier than expected due to the new surface, and then crashed and wrecked my helmet and subframe, end result was ~£300 in unexpected extras )

It's a staggering prospect at first (especially now due to the quantity of content available) but for where I am at the moment it's relatively cheap. I'll be making new content purchases off my iRacing credits for quite a few months yet (probably years actually!).

Yeah, once you have everything it generally seems to be 1-3 pieces of content every 3 months or so, which is a nice comfortable amount, especially after the 25% off, it's just a case of building up to having all (or all that you want) of the content...

I signed up for Iracing on Wednesday using the 3 for 1 offer, it is by far the best racing game I have played. The whole experience is on another level to anything else avalible. The learning curve is steep if you haven't done much racing before, otherwise it's just getting used to the way the cars handle and learning the tracks until you can confidently race in traffic. I was on it all weekend, very addictive.

Tracks are $15 for long ones (and ones with multiple layouts) shorter ones are $12

I've subbed for a month.

Couple of questions, why are there no split times when qualifying and should i be cutting the throttle when changing up in the mx5?

Ive been using iRacing since October and love it, Ive only got as far as D in road class but still love racing the Mazda, so much fun can be had in these and the "England Club" races them in a series every week ans are a great bunch of lads.

I bet ive spent well over £150 on content though!!

http://www.nessoft.com/ispeed/ does the below & more.
I don't use it as it puts me off I start driving to hard.

Shows best splits, comparison to best splits, and optimal lap times (thanks, Stephane).
Shows time delta compared to best lap.
Shows speed +/- compared to your best lap at this point on the track.
Can show +/- speed and deltas for someone else's lap file.
Can show statistics from another computer via the web interface.
Can show statistics on your iPhone / iPod touch / similar.

You need to join a race (nvidia cup) theres a race every hour on the hour.
If you hover over the MPR tab top right next to the helmet it will show you what you need to do to get promotion.

Looking at the qualifying times this week that would put you around the middle, the very quickest are doing 1:40's but 1:44 is plenty to get some good racing in, just remember, especially with safety rating, it's far more important to be consistent and clean than outright pace (let alone the fact that very very few people can come that close to the 'aliens')
