Racism in Ukraine this summer

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's family have joined Theo Walcott's relatives in staying at home during the European Championship for fear of being victims of racial abuse in Ukraine.

The news comes as the PFA announced plans to allow clubs to sack players if they are found guilty of racist behaviour.

Walcott's brother Ashley confirmed on Twitter last week that he and his father Don would not take the risk after public warnings from the Foreign Office.

On Thursday Whitehall officials reiterated their concerns and Joleon Lescott, one of eight black players in the England squad, revealed that other families, like that of Oxlade-Chamberlain, are opting to stay away.

The Foreign Office launched a free guide to fans for Euro 2012 on Thursday. Two of the recommendations in the 130-page guide are:

Travellers of Asian or Afro-Caribbean descent and individuals belonging to religious minorities should take extra care.

Although homosexuality is legal in Ukraine, public attitudes are less tolerant than in the UK and public displays of affection may attract negative attention.

Lescott said his family had decided to stay at home before the warnings were issued, simply for logistical reasons.

'It was quite alarming to see the reports about the situation out there,' he said.

'But even before the reports, my family weren't going anyway. Maybe if I'm playing and we get to the final, my family will want to go.

'But it's a shame for some members of the squad that their families feel they can't go.'

Walcott's family aren't going either: http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/...o-euro-2012-amid-fears-of-racism-7758217.html

Is this really a serious problem there? Obviously there will be elements of it everywhere but I've not seen players families refusing to go because of such issues before?

I've also heard reports of the FA warning people to be careful as there are a lot of hooligans/gangs who may try and cause trouble.

It doesn't sound great, perhaps not the best place to hold a tournament...

Way of life over there, they know the score.

Turk and eastern Europe is like 1980s England, no wonder they are flocking to UK shores to live.

Yes it's massive over there, it's not just skin colour they've got a problem with its the foreigners full stop. SSN did a pretty shocking undercover piece on it last week (one set of thugs specifically have a problem with Spurs supporters) :(

Cant wait for 2018 WC should be fun with English fans walking around topless and drinking in the street...oh wait they wont be able to lol

So really how can ufea/FIFA allow a tournament to go ahead in a country where racism and footie violence is common?

Cold you imagine the outcry if this years euros where to be held in the uk?

Same could be said for Russia hosting the World Cup. At the end of the day money talks and all their campaigns are just a facade for the no.1 priority.

Didnt anyone see the Sky Sports Investigation into gangs in Ukraine?
Think there were "Ultras" from Shaktar Donesk and Dynamo Moscow who spout nazi propaganda - they are bitter enemies who arrange fights on the day of matches.

Anyways, they decided on a truce for the Euros ....so they can fight together.
The Sky reporter asked them what would happen if they seen an England flag draped over a statue in a city centre and his one word response was "FIGHT".

Anyone going, dont drape flags over statues...you dont know who's watching you ;)

Poland isn't very nice either but from what I've read its better than the Ukraine. Probably down to their ties with Russia. Which itself wiill be an interesting World Cup when Africa arrives...

because fifa want exposure in places one wouldn't immediatley associate with football, places like ukraine and UAE.

i read about this today and it's not just the racism that's an issue, it's apparently an incredibly voilent place. i (unfortuanetly) feel there could be a fatality of an english fan during this tournament.

Where did that come from

Sorry Mark Chamberlain is a money grabbing, pushy father with few morals...

AOC's entire time as a member of Saints first team was dominated by his dad hammering about in the press about how is career would be better at Arsenal, just wasn't really polite or well thought out (as he was his agent too) when he was setting L1 on fire.

Bit frustrating to watch someones dad forcefully try and dictate a career for his own gain, hardly the mark of a caring father...

tbh FIFA have priced out most of the real fans, only the rich can go or the ones that safe, its not the same as the 80s 90s England real working class fans that would go, same with the FA that give 30k tickets to each team for a cup final, total joke, the passion has gone and fans are from all walks of life.

Going to a young eastern European country with conflicts and economy problems things will happen the same with Cricket that was held in Pakistani people tried to blow up team coaches (cricket is banned now in Pakistin) or Africans teams getting attacked in Africa on the team coach, the world aint sunshine and rainbows, its a very scary place and if you have liberal thinking you are going to get hurt.

Keep to what you know, WC 10 had loads of Africans striking over pay and conditions, didn't hear much trouble but a long way to go to cause trouble, football is due a dark day and I think it will come in the Euros.

Cant wait for Qatar and England fans, wtf are they going to do, cant sing in cities, can drink, cant gamble, cant go around with shirts off in serious heat.

so racism isn't prevalent in the USA? Mexico? south Africa? Spain, Italy, Portugal too its like these governing bodies select the most racist countries to host the events, nothing new there.

for example in Holland the far right won and were offering Turks and Moroccans a wage for life and renounce their citizenship and move back to their country of origin?

If one of my sons had a chance to play at Arsenal under Wenger or Saints I know where I'd be pushing hard for him to go, it's actually a no brainer.

Krakow, where England are based for 2012 is a city rife with neo nazis and hooligans. Wisla krakow have links to neo nazis and they have a bitter rivalry with krakovia (they chant things like 'your mother is a jew whore' to krakovia fans). Poland and Ukraine are equally as bad. The only saving grace is that there not as violent/ racist as the Turks, Serbians or Bosnians.

Russia is just as bad, its all based on a twisted view of 1980s football hooliganism. They idolise the English but if there's any groups of English lads up for a fight, regardless of skin colour they will get one. I seriously wouldn't travel to the euros if I was of an ethnic minority

there are infact few European countries which are not racist that could hold a European games.

Spain gives you monkey chanting against black players. same in Italy. France is in the middle of racial conflict having banned the headscarfs in public etc. Germany is trying to get rid of as many Turks as possible. Portugal has a racial divide you know im running out of footballing infact any countries that don't have overt racial tendencies and turmoil.

so where would you host the games?
