Hello all. This is my first post on these forums, so hope this aint too newb.

Been searching for a graphic card for my new rig and it's coming down to either:

- The radeon 4870 1GB
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-091-PC

or

- The BFG Geforce GTX 260 OC 896MB
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-078-BG

Thing is, I've read that although the radeon performs well with larger displays (will be playing on a full HD tv), I've also heard that it runs very hot, with some reports of loud fan / "scraping" noise.

Any advice you folks can offer on the pros/cons of each card would be much appreciated.

my vote is for the maxcore - especially with the nVidia 180 drivers. They run cool and quiet and performance is decent.

4870 is cheaper, has more memory and performs better in most of the benchmarks I've seen, so it appears to be the better buy.

I'm also thinking of going with the 4870 soon.

There are plenty of reviews about, would suggest reading some of those, it helps to see what performance increases you'd get in the games you play.

I'd also recommend the 4870, as for them running hot it's more a case that the reference cooler is a load of rubbish. Although this is pretty much the case with all reference coolers, regardless of the card. There have been some issues with the fans not running at the correct speed, although I expect that's been sorted by now.

There are plenty of aftermarket coolers and they are all pretty easy to fit, so should you find the reference cooler too loud, just change it.

+1 for gtx260. runs very cool, little noise, has a lot of overclocking potential, and when you do overclock it there is a noticibly bigger difference in performance compared to other cards from when it was at default clocks. sensitive to overclocking you could say i spose.

these are things the 4870 does not have from what ive read all over the web.

Although the 4870 is a good card, id go for a MAXCORE gtx260, as youd be spending the same money in the end assuming you did get an after market cooler+fan.

The 4xxx series all seem to do well in the benchmarks, but it's not only once I've read the gt200s giving an overall better and consistent gameplay experience. Less hassle, more gaming.

Might be worth waiting to see how the 180 driver shapes up... with the betas I have 7-10% gains in almost every game over 178.24 and in some cases as much as 30% higher performance it also feels smoother :)

I've also tested a 4870 and personally I didn't get on too well with it - tho your own experience may very well vary.

Of my experience with NV and ATi drivers plus the noise and heat difference i would choose the 260. It just seems a little more refined.

However, for out and out raw performance the 4870 is very obviously the card to choose.
