Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

Most of the figures people have been quoting in this thread are DX11 games so I think I will stick with that.

If anyone wants to have a go at the Firestrike Ultra challenge it will be on graphics score not overall score as that would be unfair with me using a 6950X CPU.

i think the RX480 will beat most 980 scores though

Did you find it just as amusing when leaks came in talking about 1600Mhz and 1070-beating performance and people went nuts?
Yep. Though at that point lots of people were also saying "wait it's just a rumour" which seems to have gone away this time round.

Ay? They are in stock. He has no doubt had a play or at least spoken to 8pack who will have :p
Again, he's already said he doesn't have any 3rd party ones yet (which are the ones humbug is getting upset about @ $300), and said he hasn't tested them.

You carry on believing what you will David, whilst I will take Gibbo and common sense instead.
Indeed I will - which still matches fairly well with what Gibbo is saying if you'd bothered to read the actual words written. I'm simply pointing out how silly the hype then deflation is... if you're willing to believe the odd outlier rumours over most others then why crash just cause Gibbo says he doesn't think it'll do it?

Again, I see no reason to think the 480 needs to be anywhere near the levels some people think - it's a HUGE step up from a 380 / 960 for similar money in the 4GB guise. For me I see no reason to go 8GB - if you're wanting a card that'll last you longer wait for Polaris or buy an NVIDIA, though it'll cost you either way.

Anyone wonder why the leaked clockspeeds for the RX 480 are so much lower than the Pascal cards despite having a smaller core and smaller node.

Are we in for some surprises when we see the reviews ?

Can't believe how crazy this thread has ended up and it isn't even done.

This card was never going to be as fast as a 980ti so how can anyone be disappointed?

This is probably the most epic AMD card thread I have ever seen and the card isn't even high end. :D

Well done AMD. This card will sell bucket loads. :)

I'll wait for the benchmarks, but Gibbo's comments are making me strongly consider the 1070 instead.

I would have stuck with the Nano, but I felt like 4gb was holding me back at 3440x1440 even with HBM.

I knew I should have bought AMDMatts Fury X in the MM to replace my 290X but I thought no, be patient, wait for Polaris.

Looks like its going to be a great card for a lot of people but for 290/390/Nano/Fury owners there is a longer wait to deal with

Just a few quick comments. 1) I think Gibbo was talking about OC 980ti, as that's pretty much what everyone does with it anyway. 2) Why does this not beating a 1070 suddenly mean this is at 290 levels? Pure overreaction to suggest it does.

1. Everybody made it clear we were all suggesting/hoping that the beast overclocked 480s would get close to matching stock 980ti/1070. Gibbo just came out of the blue with thats a crack dream. How were we supposed to know he was referring to 1500Mhz 980ti? Plus since then he still seems to be saying even at stocks, no chance as people dont realise just how fast a 980ti is eg 40% faster than a 980 or 390x.

2. In theory since the rumours show (although sapphire confirmed a 20% overclock a 1500Mhz) that these cards overclock very, very well and if you can buy cards pre OC at 1500Mhz then surely there is headroom above that so you might be able to get say up to 1800Mhz under water which would be a 40% oc (just live the 980ti achives in oc) but if with a 40% overlcok its still nowhere near a 1070 stock then the card cant be starting out at 390x/980 levels of performance and must be lower at say 390 performance.

This thread is utterly hilarious. Seanspeed and D.P., the two guys who were derided as 'Nvidia shills' now emerge as the most level-headed and accurate. Meanwhile, the AMD cats have turned on each other big time. The impact of Gibbo's brutal destruction of the excessive hype surrounding this card has been such that many have completely lost their minds.

The main issue with those now completely dismissing this card is that they seem to think the 390X is close to the 980 Ti. Where this silliness comes from I have no idea. As Gibbo alluded to earlier, the entire Internet clearly shows the 980 Ti smashes the 390X. I know that a lot of AMD fans despise Nvidia, but they shouldn't let such emotions cloud their judgement. Nvidia's high end is simply on another level and has been for quite some time.

The upside to this is that there's a large gap in performance that can potentially be filled. The 480 could find a nice spot there.

Nobody ever sais the 390x was close to a 980ti we all know its 20% slower.

Apparently we are all wrong as its 40% slower.

It is a midrange part, regardless of what AMD initially wanted for Polaris or however many people want to hype it as a 1070/1080 competitor. So glad Gibbo put a lid on the mayham. Imagine the rending of cloths and gnashing of teeth had the hype train continued.

That said, 390x performance at stock and Fury overclocked for £220 is still good.

Err a 1070/80 is Nvidaia midrange part too..................................

Suppose its worth while even holding off till the 29th on seeing what the 480 can do?Looking for a 60FPS @ 1440 GPU. Now the 480 mightnt be it, but it might give Nvidia a poke regarding their pricing of the 1070 if the 480 is anywhere near it??

It's probably been mentioned already, but this is a loooong thread, what are we expecting the uk prices to be like??

Personally I'm thinking £250-£260 for the 8gb version, or am I way out??

Err a 1070/80 is Nvidaia midrange part too..................................

It's nearly £400 for the floor model 1070... The 470 launched at £300-350, the 570 was less, £280-330 and similarly the 670. What's happened is that the tiers have gone up in price bracket and no one seems all that bothered.

An AMD clean sweep at the £200-300 mark is great for everyone, except those who drop £400+++ on a mid range part lol

We've also got Vega to come
