Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

so procedural generation just happened to make every frame look less detailed on the 480's for the entire bench run

yeah, it could happen I guess

2 480's running at 52% utlisation is only slightly above using a single 480, it makes no sense that 2 cards showing only barely half utilisation would be beating a much faster card running near full utilisation

"Every frame"? How exactly do you think that procedurally generated terrain wouldn't make every frame different? Do you imagine that all frames would be the same and then suddenly for a fraction of a second one frame has a crater flash by? Of course procedurally generated terrain changes every frame.

What I mean is, why is it that every section of every piece of detail is lower on the 480's. If the difference was purely down to procedural generation then there should be some sections and items on the 1080's that look less than the 480's, but looking through the images it is ALWAYS the 480's that show less detail, never the 1080.

Yeah well done, what really happens with procedural generation is it doesn't change the map when generating it, it changes it on the fly, because it makes perfect sense to have more snow one frame, then less snow the next frame, then more snow the next frame, repeating infinitely.....

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

If different settings were used, it would show in the leaderboard results. As you can see, both used the same settings. Note the name of the tester, 'RadeonDemo'.

Or, you know, the 480 always rendered more snow.... there isn't more detail, there is just less snow on the 1080, nothing more or less.

The entire map isn't procedurally generated, weather effects and some minor unit location differences are determined up front. Like this run side A gets 40 small guys and side B gets 60 and the weather is blizzard level snow. Another run says side A gets 60 units and side B gets 40, and it's a light snow day.

so any idea when the real uk prices will hit and something other than the ashes demo to go off matt ? im sat here waiting to order a 1080 come end of the month gosh darn it!!!

I will always add a lot of value to having the solution in a single card. I view CF / SLi as primarily a means for people to upgrade who already have one card and can't / wont spend a fortune to replace it with a single double-power card. So if the performance is roughly equal, I'd suggest the 1070.

That said, I personally would recommend holding on for the actual launch of Polaris because they might have other news and we might also find out more about when Vega is released. You don't want to be regretting buying a 1070 within five months of buying it.

I built a new rig around 3-4 weeks ago, and I'm currently using on-board graphics. I was waiting for the 1070, which is just about bearable. Don't think I can wait any longer!

Cleared up - they meant every image (as in from the screenshots) rather than every frame. So to address the intent rather than do the Internet thing and have a pointless four page argument over the wording (of paper launch), I think it's a reasonable question for someone to ask. But I think the answers are fair. We have official benchmarks from the AotS studio that show the CF 480 solution ahead. We only have a few screenshots, hand-picked that show snowier scenes on the 480 side in some instances and we also have little indication that this makes a relevant difference, so I'm calling FUD on this one on the part of Fudzilla.

But we wanted orange.

I understand why you wanted such a fruit.
but not everyone else here is you in fact everyone else here and otherwise is different from you.

The 480 series and 470 series seems to be the dream come true, powerful and cool and priced for 90% of customers to buy now
If you want even more power, Vega the big brother is coming in october.

AMD adress the big market that buys cards in the segment, like myself and good for me I am different from you and everyone else if I wasnt imagine being someone else and then not knowing you are someone else than yourself?

Anyhow, I am getting a 480 for now I check that a lot of people are confused and try to find fault instead of enjoying their life, so I await reviews later in a few weeks, then I wait for E3, also some BF1 action and then something I cant say as it borders on some adult content which would be to much for you kids hearing here but I am sure it will be totally absolutly a great year for amd.

:)

Well if the money is burning a hole in your pocket, my personal opinion is get the 1070. I think the future of dual-GPU solutions is looking more promising because new technologies are making it less of a hassle to implement than it used to be. (And if, I emphasize if, some rumours are true and we do start seeing multi-GPU consoles, then support for the solution will become the norm). However, that day is not this day and I will always favour the single card solution currently.

So, that's one random person on the Internet's advice, given under the strict assumption that you must have shiny now. ;) Either way, you're going to get some powerful graphics for your money so buy and be happy. :)

Lisa Su (CEO) said they will be on shelves on the 29th June.

yeah i know that but you'd hope they would put a bit more info out than the day they release especially if they have the claimed performance. the longer we wait the more questions will get asked.

I think they are holding out due to the 1070's imminent release. It's perfectly understandable.
I think the idea is they want questions to be asked right now. I am sure all questions will be answered before release date.
You should just make a decision on the 29th either way. We will all have a much clearer picture then.
You said end of the month and there are 30 days in June.

;-)

yes but i want as much time as possible to change my mind 10000's of times :D

Only understandable if it isnt that fast and is only 970/390 performance.

If it was near 1070 performance surely they would be saying so otherwise they will lose a lot of sales to the 1070 that they could have otherwise had.
