Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

Only understandable if it isnt that fast and is only 970/390 performance.

If it was near 1070 performance surely they would be saying so otherwise they will lose a lot of sales to the 1070 that they could have otherwise had.

It has been stated many times the 480 is on par with a 390x/980, possibly a little more - based on the leaked benches seen.

I doubt they will lose sales to the 1070 if around the same day as the 1070's release AMD seed what will be a superior performing GPU.

The ideal time to strike with new info is at 1070 release.

Which is a week away. The ideal time to tell people if it is close to 1070 performance is now.

You would only keep people guessing if you knew it wasnt going to be close but still hoped to keep people guessing enough so as to make them wait.

Or just before it. People will preorder the 1070

I don't think there's much danger of losing sales when it's $200. These will sell like hotcakes. You only had to look at this forum to see all the people with 280xs or 960s or lower who already pretty much have their hearts set on it

I am sure if the 1070 was already on shelves AMD would have given more info already.

On the flip side, If the 480 was already out Nvidia would have given more in for on the 1070.

It doesn't need to be 1070 performance, there's likely going to be £150 difference between the cards.

I know it doesn't.

There seems to be some speculation on here though that it is going to be Fury/Nano levels of performance meaning it will be close to the 1070.

If that is the case, they need to start telling people :p

390/390x performance for $200 is great but I wont be interested in it as I already have a 980. I want something faster. If it is Fury levels then I might be tempted as a stop gap till vega/gp102 as $200 for that level of performance is brilliant. If it is only 390/970 levels of performance I will get a 1070. We have had a 145w card in that performance bracket since September 2014 (the 970) so it will be a bit underwhelming, apart from the price ofcourse.

The reviews and prices of the 1070 are already out were just waiting for stock now.

Hmm, what to do? What to do?

Got 3 gaming pc's -
FX 8350 & R9 390.
4960k & R9 390
Phenom 965T and 6950 - least used.

So, buy a Rx480 for one of the top 2 and run dual 390's in the other keeping the 6950 machine as it is,

Buy a Rx480 and run 390's in each of the other 2.

Stay as I am and wait for Vega & Zen.

Suspect I won't be able to resist the 480 for long.

The fact you consider this (and assuming others are too) even though the two GPU's are in different segments, shows there is every possibility that AMD mid-range could poach Nvidia high end sales.

...and we don't even know yet if AMD have another GPU faster than the 480 to launch.

They released a slide showing the 1070's relative gaming performance very shortly after the 6th May announcement and released a similar slide actually at the announcement on the 6th May.

I don't know why it is so hard for AMD to do that instead of all this smoke and mirrors and the frankly odd and unhelpful comparison of 480's in xfire against a single 1080 in the game that AMD performs best on.

I know! Which is my whole point . If they do want to poach 1070 sales, they need to say what the cards performance is before it launches.

Otherwise a HELL of a lot of people will be buying the 1070 on launch. (look how many people have bought the crazy priced 1080 already and are in the queue for that)

Bear in mind that in the may 2016 steam survey. 18% of users (thats nearly 1 in 5) are using intel ingerated graphics to game on... There isn't data per card but I can only assume based on the fact that 1 in 5 don't have a GPU that 90% or more of people are running GTX700 seires or lower cards.

This 480 will sell extremely well. There is an enormous market to grab.

So what are you going to do then??
Sounds to me like a combination of intrigue and frustration.

I would hazard that you, along will many others, will be prepared to wait and see.

If I where you I would set an absolute performance level in your mind of what you would be prepared to pay at around £380 for 1070 and at £200 for a 480. Then the decision will be easy as information and stock arrives.

If AMD does announce a better performing GPU in the meantime above the 480 you can just do the same with that. Match performance to the price.

.

I dont know! I just don't like all this wierd sort of skirting round the issue of what it actually performs like that AMD are doing. Will be pretty annoyed to wait for it only to be a cheaper more efficient 390 level card :p

LOL

...don't wait for it then. We don't want you getting annoyed, do we.

How much faster is the 1070 to the 390?

Is it worth £370?

AMD have their reasons for doing what they do. Who knows what that is?

As others have said, these two GPU's are different segments and based on that you should have already made your mind up but AMD have already seeded you into considering a lower teir due to the amazing price of the 480.

Decisions, decisions.

Still on a 7950 and this seems a perfect upgrade at a great price for me

seems Nvidia is cheating again;
https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/4m692q/concerning_the_aots_image_quality_controversy/

"At present the GTX 1080 is incorrectly executing the terrain shaders responsible for populating the environment with the appropriate amount of snow. The GTX 1080 is doing less work to render AOTS than it otherwise would if the shader were being run properly. Snow is somewhat flat and boring in color compared to shiny rocks, which gives the illusion that less is being rendered, but this is an incorrect interpretation of how the terrain shaders are functioning in this title."

Main reason for AMD and 480 is they can do true async compute.
Nvidia cant.
A game developer stated amd is true async compute.
Nvidia is silent.

I know what I buy.
