Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

seems Nvidia is cheating again;
https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/4m692q/concerning_the_aots_image_quality_controversy/

"At present the GTX 1080 is incorrectly executing the terrain shaders responsible for populating the environment with the appropriate amount of snow. The GTX 1080 is doing less work to render AOTS than it otherwise would if the shader were being run properly. Snow is somewhat flat and boring in color compared to shiny rocks, which gives the illusion that less is being rendered, but this is an incorrect interpretation of how the terrain shaders are functioning in this title."

Main reason for AMD and 480 is they can do true async compute.
Nvidia cant.
A game developer stated amd is true async compute.
Nvidia is silent.

I know what I buy.

Also the fact that more snow in a scene is usually more taxing on a GPU anyway, this is seen in BF4 snow maps for one.

You would buy a 1080ti when released :D

Interesting comment in that reddit article

"Scaling is 151% of a single card."

So a single 480 would get around 40fps.

Where does that put it?

Its on redit on from a AMD employee so it must be true... ;)

Why where two different versions used for the Polaris bench and the 1080 bench in there demo ? as shown in the links from AMDMatt

edit theirs also no data on the resolution the 1080 was benched at so that is in doubt as well.

A bit fishy if you ask me lol

Robert Hallock explained that they used 2 cards for the test, so they didn't upset the reviewers :|

Yeah that seemed a bit eyebrow raising to say the least. Showing proper results for one game at one resolution is somehow going to "scoop" the reviewers? To say that s a flimsy answer is an understatement, reeks of grade A BS.

from the redit post:

In Game Settings for both configs: Crazy Settings | 1080P | 8x MSAA | VSYNC OFF

Ashes Game Version: v1.12.19928

Slightly different game versions

It seems that was one of the earlier runs from the day before, the date of the 1080 run that i linked was from a day earlier.

EDIT

Trying to locate the actual links used on the day.

I don't know have to seen the rubbish that took place when Jayztwocents was asked about the 1080 thermal throttling and why he didn't address it? The chap went a little bit hulk mode there, throwing personal insults, blocking people on youtube and twitter.

Some reviewers are odd, he also claims that AMD used low settings fort he 480's and it still ran worse than the 1080 at high at Computex.

So I can honestly see some reviewers getting a bit antsy over silly things. :p

at least that clear up up one thing - when they put 51% utilisation, they meant 151% scaling... apparently

so a single 480 gets around 41fps in AOTS at those settings

As someone who's been running Crossfired 280X's for a couple of years there's no way in hell I'd ever consider going for RX480 in crossfire, no matter the price.

The driver support for Crossfire is terrible. At best you get support a month or 2 after release of new titles and then it's shoddy like The Division's is. The Witcher 3 still has some issues, mainly because they give up on crossfire after the first attempt.

I decided to go all in with Nvidia and get a 1080, this announcement actually makes me feel happier with that decision.

And the test was at 1440P, so that puts it quite a bit ahead of my AoTS run with an overclocked Titan X. That's pretty incredible really.

No, 1080p

the 1440p run was 51fps which would equate to 33fps on a single card using the scaling figure Robert posted

Which is a week away. The ideal time to tell people if it is close to 1070 performance is now.

You would only keep people guessing if you knew it wasnt going to be close but still hoped to keep people guessing enough so as to make them wait.

alright, the 1080 was released a week ago, here is the 1080 Page most arriving mid late june, only available one with small stock is reference one( sorry Founder edition )
same will be with 1070, official release 10th june, but stock and first custom shows few weeks later.
beside we are bound to see leaks about polaris a week or 2 before 29th june, when stock starts showing at retailers.
