Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

I could dream that the 480 will be able to compete with a 1070 at 1440p, but I'm doubtful it will.

Really don't want to dive into the world of crossfire either. Would rather bite the bullet and pay a bit more for a single card :/

I'm keeping my Fury until I get real world info. If the 480 does do what it says on the tin then that is certainly a nice card for the money. Lets see the info and proper benches first and then I may still wait for vega's benches before deciding to upgrade.

I never sell on a card as my lad gets all my cast offs for free, so there will be plenty of work for the fury to do in the future. My lad will get some good framerates on 1080P with it.

I hope everyone is happy with their purchases whichever side you lean to and may all your pixels shine brightly :)

Starting to sound like Flopper now LOL :p

If i can get Fury x performance for less than i paid for my R9 380 8gb card then i may actually upgrade whilst they are current Generation rather than being 2 or 3 generations behind current Video cards.

My budget is about £180 and I have been hunting around for either something second hand or hoping the NV cards would drop in the next month.

I will be buying one of these now, it's a no brainer.

same i have been waiting for a cheapo card to replace my nearly 3 year old 270x.

new amd cards seem to suit me nicely, cheap and high performance a nice boost over my old card that cost 140 quid nearly 3 years ago sign me up :D

It is going to be probably around R9 390X level at around £200 for the 8GB version.

that would do me sweet, it is night and day seeing my m8 run a 390x in his room compared to my 270x, just didnt want to spend about 300 or more for that performance lol

walked in and seen him playing the witcher 3 and i was like wow that is some rapid fps... he has a i5 haswell im on skylake, just been waiting on a nice priced gpu and been holding fire on buying one :)

This card does look good for me, I cant see me going any higher than 1080p for a while but my 7950 is showing its age when I try and up the settings on some games so I was going to look at second hand 980's but if these perform at a good price point then it would be crazy not to consider this :)

Yup this is what I come to the graphics section on OCUK for - pedantic arguments over what type of launch it was. I really hope Vega is announced in the near future. I just don't think I will be able to bear any more than maybe three months without reading about how stupid somebody is for referring to a graphics card launch using the wrong terminology.

pmsl so true :o:D

I am considering a new build with an AMD 8320e and two 480's.

I have a theory that AMD's new feature GCN 4 feature set may point to better CPU utilization in DX11 games along with the DX12 benefits already available to it.

Any thoughts on that?

Not Zen? You mad?

No but Zen is a while off yet and will be more than twice the price.

The other option is to remain with a single card until ZEN arrives.

There won't be much performance boost using Zen CPU's over FX CPU's in newer DX12 games at least. That's why I ask the question about DX11 and the 480's feature set, but alas nobody will no until AMD tell us. I am just considering options.

So i guess the biggest question is....

Now DX12 seems to be picking up some steam with newer games using it and with the fact that AMD seem to have a considerable advantage over Nvidia in that area, even with their 10XX generation....

Then if the 480 is around Nano performance (Massive speculation on that though)...

We'll essentially have a £180-£200 AMD card which is close in performance to a 1070, a £400 card. When running in DX12 games...

The implications that has for driving down Nvidia prices is massive.

I haven't really been following this closely, but is there any consensus on whether XFire RX480 (8GB) would be a better choice than a single 1080... at considerable saving also?

You're better of buying the single card option even with the additional cost, Of course there are exceptions, such as if you only play one or two particular games that have decent crossfire support but if you play a large selection of games and get games when they release you will be better off with the single card solution. I'd say you'd be better of with a 1070.

The 1070 and 1080 show good gains. 1080 is dx12 king at the moment and the 1070 is showing good gains over 980ti in something like hitman and is rivaling the Fury X (like it should as it is a ~980ti performing card).

They certainly don't have a "considerable" advantage against the 1000 series.

Regarding GPU's I'm AMD since 2010 and always will be and I have my reasons. Having said that I nearly turned at one point but decided not to. Let us not get into that.
