Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

Thought these were supposed to be coming with a backplate.

Glad someone else has mentioned this, I know its silly, but my current card doesn't have one and it really annoys me, I wont be buying one of these without one. The card is still a big upgrade over my 7950 but I'm now thinking of holding out for the custom cooled ones.

Damn it. I've been waiting and waiting patiently, and now I feel I need to wait for AIB's before hitting the buy button. Tempted by the XFX Black but the clock speed is barely any higher than the £175 card. Hard to justify an increase of 1/3 cost for 60Mhz and an extra 4Gb.

At £175 this is exactly the card i was looking for. Considering i paid that for an R9 380 6 months ago, this is a winner.

People seem to be forgetting it's a 380 replacement. It's for people not on a 970 or 290/390 already. The 4GB is a good buy IMO.
Well, it's arguably a 380X replacement, too.

4GB is a good buy at current prices though, definitely.

8GB is still a good buy, but at £45 more, it doesn't have nearly the same value factor going for it. Which is a shame as it's going to be the card many will prefer to have.

In the end, it's still a jump in performance/price ratio, just maybe not what a lot of us were hoping for a 1.5x node jump plus new architecture. Looking a lot like outside of DX12 titles, you're going to need a decent OC on a 480 to match a decently OC'd 970. So question is - how much are those going to cost and does the value factor remain?

I do think people should stop saying, "Oh but you can get a 970 now for £220, this card is worthless!". Those prices are only because of the 480 coming in. It's like when the 970 came out and 780Ti's were reduced to £300 or so and arguing, "What's the point of the 970, you can get a 780Ti for £300!", ya know? It's a discontinued card at this point, not a viable option going into the future.

I now wonder if AMD haven't made for a reasonably easy performance target for Nvidia to match/beat with GP106.

Isnt that the idea ? this card was supposed to bring VR capable power for a much better price.

Really the current price of the 970 and 390(x) is throwing a lot of issues ,..... but only as they are EOL

I'm just struggling to get my head around how AMD have effectively gone down two process nodes and managed to not really improve noise, heat, power consumption, or overclockability.

The less said about the 8GB cards the better really.

My problem isn't so much today's price but that when the 970 launched it could be had for £235. So essentially all the 480 8gb version is offering over what a 970 did when it launched 2 years ago is an extra 4gb ram, for roughly the same price.

Well heat could be argued its a very basic cooler and the heat on a smaller die is more focused creating a dense hot spot, presumably aftermarket coolers will do much better. As for the rest, no clue =/

Yet another dissappointment from AMD. I suppose we should be used to it by now. Sad to see that they still haven't got power draw under control either.

Not worth the upgrade over my 290x a great card for a lot of people though, it will sell well. I might still be interested in an AIB offering depending on what they can do with the clock speeds as I want 8GB so more waiting for me

Hopefully amd gain back some market share with this and gpu prices drop across the board
