Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

Interesting to see the reactions of people vs some of the reviews. People are saying AMD are doomed and total fail card etc, but review sites are pretty positive. Hardocp gave it a silver award and PCPer gave it a gold award. AMD have to have done something really good to impress PCper.

I am little disappointed for myself, but, only because I am looking to replace my 290 with something else.

These are good cards and will sell really well. It's a shame the Brexit pushed prices up as these are fantastic value in dollars, and would have been a good buy at £199.

Oh Dear :( wouldnt like to be those AMD guys on the upcoming AMA's lol... they are going to get panned....

Massively underwhelming really in its current state, again AMD skimp on a horrendously bad cooling design for their reference card, and this time it seems the OC'ing potential is also non existant while also pushing out their new OCing control panel... just what the actual flip? that is laughable at best... seriously, theres some bumbling clowns at AMD that need to be fired.

This card was aimed at the lower end of the spectrum, and it kinda almost delivers there, but its so massively underwhelming at the same time...

The only hope is the Aftermarket cooled ones have some form of Overclocking that allows some actual real performance over stock to be achieved.

How's that tactic worked out over the years? People want the performance now. Besides when the performance arrives there's new shinny cards around. A good card but as usual I feel amd are going to mess it around in other areas.

Look at any recent Benchmarks for 680 vs 7970, Titan vs 290x 780ti vs 290x and you will see that these all once competed with each other now AMD just runs away.

Well well well... So much for the magic press drivers people were clinging on to.

Tut tut AMD. Did not meet expeditions once again.

That said I would still buy a 4GB 480 for £175 over a 970.

My disappointment comes from the lack of performance we got jumping from 28nm to 14nm and a new architecture. AMD needed to match 390X performance at the very least for this card to have lived up to all the hype IMO.

Hopefully there is some truth to the 1600MHz overclocks from custom cards. Those could potentially be interesting I suppose.

For some reason TPU puts this between a R9 390 and an R9 390X over 16 games:

Had not had a chance to look at all the reviews as half the sites have ground to a halt, but how is this slower than a GTX970 overall??

It isn't but the 970 is very close and likely will match or out do it when both are at max overclocks.

Also the 970 came out nearly 22 months a go and has around the same power draw.

The RX480 is still the better buy though at this price point.

At least it does a bit better in the Digital foundry tests, It's still giving us the low end of what was expected/ hoped for though which is a shame and apparently with the 4gb model using slower ram there will be the smallest of differences between the two meaning the 8gb is the better option.

NVIDIA's current Pascal architecture, is still over 70% more power-efficient. This makes me wonder a bit, how NVIDIA managed to gain such huge improvements, while bumping up GPU clock to 2 GHz, and AMD is still running in the 1200 MHz range, with worse power consumption.

Where's humbug at? Can't wait to see his response.

A week ago the poor guy thought this was a 980 Ti.

Lmfao :D

to be fair he did make some good points was right re where the card will be sat and

tbh i am disappointed ..

Amd are 2 years late to this party that's the way i see it its not any more efficient than an 970 and that's on 28nm 2 years old

With Guru saying 1375mhz was pushing it I very much doubt we will see pre overclocked cards at 1600mhz!

The only thing that does is make amd card owners hang on to the cards for longer which means they are not buying new amd cards, something which is an issue for amd.
