Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

Seems quite a decent card, AMD did what they said they would, which is bring entry VR performance to affordable levels.

People here who are calling it **** are overreacting. £175 for a card which performs at 970 levels in DX11 games and at 980/390X levels in DX12 games is great value for money. If the value of the pound didn't crash, the price of the card would be even lower.

For many yes it is not going to offer a performance upgrade that is worthwhile and for others isnt. Yet why discard the point that SALES will determine the success of the card for the general public not just PC enthusiasts that this thread is full of and are a small percentage of global sales. It is similar in price in 4GB to the GTX 960.

I do see lots of system sellers using this card to offer affordable PC upgrade from consoles. Said this several times as personally I am one of them and have other friends considering the same due to WIN 10 Xbox and seeking better than console gaming in general. Yet If like me people want good DX12 performance and HDR compatibility then the older discontinued cards both AMD and Nvidia are not worthwhile options. Not everyone is just FPS focused.

The incoming options will be RX480 AIB and GTX1060 but eventually you have to buy something and not keep putting off to the next thing around the corner.

Shows what a gulf there is between the AMD and Nvidia architectures when the 480 is about on par with the 1070 in power consumption, it's embarrassing.

The 4gb is very good value. It's more or less on the same level as a 970, but has more vram, better price, newer tech.

feels strange to use this as an encouragement to buy a card which just about matches a card that's already been out for years.

AMD what on earth are you doing?

Almost 980 performance, in some instances, pretty much exactly where the early leaks put it. Overclocks past 980(stock). Not that shabby really for the price point.

Custom cards may well clock a bit higher and could be a performance bargain. :)

My problem isn't so much today's price but that when the 970 launched it could be had for £235. So essentially all the 480 8gb version is offering over what a 970 did when it launched 2 years ago is an extra 4gb ram, for roughly the same price.
970's started at £250 for the very cheapest ones, but the nicer 3rd party cooler cards were more like £270-280, with premium ones going up to £300 in some cases.

So there's definitely more of a difference than you're saying, but regardless, it's still a good point. The price/performance ratio has not moved on much.

I guess Leave supporters can be slightly to blame...8GB card should only be about £200.

Would i see the benefits of 75hz freesync if i lower the settings, and have the card at 75fps the whole time?

No, because FreeSync disables itself in that situation. The point would be to raise your graphics settings and accept a bit of fluctuation (drops) below 75Hz/75fps without needing to worry about tearing or stuttering.

They didn't, if you shopped around i think it was the MSI one that was £235 right at launch. Don't forget that 970 prices went up really quickly after launch at which point they mostly became £250+ but there was a short period where some were a bit cheaper, i can't remember why but probably the usual £/$ shennanigans.

I'm right here - and looks like performance is all over the place; drivers still need to be worked on......sometimes it equals 980 refs and other times it doesn't.

the 4 gig card is a nice buy at its price; the 8 gig card needs to come down. It also looks like ref cooler is holding it back - waiting to see what aftermarket coolers do for it. Am I disappointed? A little - a specs wise it should be matching 390X/980 more than it does right now...

Looks like a combo of ref cooler not able to oc much and drivers still need to be worked on.....while its not a true 390X replacement; the 490 will do that - I don't think we've seen 480 really stretch its legs yet...
