Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

Perhaps because they don't want Nvidia to pre-empt such a move before they can get it to market.
Perhaps AMD think they can get it on the market close to a 1070 in performance @ $300 vs $375 when the 1070 is out and set at that price.

Nvidia have already made their move and the card is out in 3 days and from what we have seen by the 1080 launch, 1000's of people will buy one. Some of which might have gone for or waited an extra few weeks for this fabled 490.

Re the 490 (if there even is one) - Why would you not announce that you are doing this though to steal sales and pre orders from the 1070? It makes no sense, for a card coming out 2 weeks after the competition. It would certainly make me think twice seen as at the moment I am going more towards getting a 1070.
I agree with what you're saying. A leaked benchmark (please not crossfire) to generate some buzz.

That'll be the case if NVIDIA have a large amount of stock ready. So far with the 1080 it's only been trickling out cards.

I'm hoping AMD are not only biding their time to release a full suite of cards, but to launch them all with a a decent amount of stock ready.

The Fury line had a terrible hard launch because of lack of cards, and then those cards also having severe QC issues in regards to the Fury X.

I'd be buying a custom so judging by the 1080 release I'd cardless for a few weeks longer!

Waiting for the other to commit and then do better is a strategy battle thats been going on for a long time.

Agreed, although i feel going forward we may start seeing good support and implementation of DX12 MGPU, what would be ideal is if AMD convinced Microsoft to put 2 GPU's in the next Xbox lol, i dont see it ever happening but it would be brilliant if they did, would definitely push DX12 MGPU support in the right direction.
Will never happen. DX12 is more likely to kill multi-GPU support than help it.

Nothing wrong with feeling sorry for people 'if' they made a regretful choice.
Shouldn't we wait til people actually HAVE that regret instead of feeling bad for people because of a speculative, hypothetical situation?

Til then, it's just ill-justified smugness talking.

Million dollar question - when's the 490 going to be released because at the moment I'm cardless and I've got a bad case of Happy Feet!

We are only guessing that amd will release the 490.

At the moment they have the rx480 4gb for $199.

Rx480 8gb for $230,that still leaves the $300 price.

Which could mean rx490 8gb for $300.

But no one know if the $300 card is gonna be released on the 29th.

It didn't really matter that there were so few Fury cards available at launch because the performance was so underwhelming compared to the pre-launch hype along with the price it put a lot of potential customers off.

Another reason I think AMD are being so conservative. They're not trying to hype their performance too much. Mostly the price and efficiency. So I hope they do launch with several cards on June 29th and back it all up with very good performance and decent drivers as well.

Exactly this, other than the missing proverbial 2 or more GPU's from one SKU there is also the missing GPU in AMD's cited higher price point of $300.

It's been mentioned previously that the $300 card could be custom cooled and factory overclocked.

$70 doesn't seem like much of a price differentiation between models?

Was that the Powercolor custom cooler thing?
Its been debunked, its a Fiji card.

1-because AMD probably knew that Nvidia's stock isnt there, and that availability is like end june rather than end of may.
2-AMD needs to have a clear cut from the mindset ppl have for power hungry cards, they rather spotlight the 480, than the 490 which in order to make it competitive with 1070 would require significant overclock probably taking it out of the intended power envelope.
3-announcing the 490 at 299$ would have eclipsed the 480 with it's 199$ and not generated this much buzz and anticipation, i think it's better this way even if they have to launch the 490 mid/end of july.

personally i do not believe they have a 490, simply because that would put a hole in their line up.
polaris 11 is 450/460, polaris 10 supposed to be 480/470 this makes a lot more sense than 480/490, and 470/460,polaris 11 is too small and should be 450/460

PowerColor specifically stated the coolers were for Polaris AND Radeon Pro Duo's (Fiji).

So the smaller version they showed off will be for a Polaris GPU of some kind.

When the base model is $200, it definitely is.

When it's $500+, sure add another $70 or more for your fancy cooler and binned chips.

At $200, you're adding almost 50% to the price, though.

The whole point of this range is that it's catering to the price-sensitive. Typically, those who want something nicer dont want a great cooler to get some awesome overclocks, they just buy the next card up.

Not as great as it could have been, if they hadn't have been ******* about for the last few months, and just released em, they could have been raking in the sales long before now, and taking chunks out of Nvidias marketshare.

NEVER have AMD said they will release sooner. They had a plan and they are planning it out.

Would you prefer they rushed it and release half-baked GPU's?

That would bring a lot of bad press and nobody should be suggesting they do that.

I do believe there is 40Cu GPU inside the 480 so in theory the extra 4CU could be enabled. But AMD have done similar before without releasing the full chip.
But I would see full Polaris 40Cu GPU as a 480x and not a 490. 11=% additional shaders would be about 7% extra performance in the real world.
