Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

I do find it rather odd that after all the speculation that AMD were so far ahead of Nvidia that Nvidia are about to release their second card under the new process before AMD have even released a single card.

D.P., Jono8 - PLEASE just stop flooding this thread with 1080 commentary. This thread has become almost nothing but either your comments about Nvidia GPUs or people getting dragged into arguing with you about it.

Nope. I have only brought up the 1080 in relation to other comments pertaining to AMD's own comparison with it. AMD themselves compared it to a 1080 and it is the only official comparison we have yet for some reason we can't talk about that? Bizarre. I not sure why it bothers people so much? We have nothing else to discuss or compare it to other than that so perhaps no one should say anything at all in this thread till AMD give us more information?

Look at Nvidia, no cards in sight, people saying AMD are 6+ months ahead, as they've been showing Polaris since last year, while Nvidia have shown nowt, not a sausage, and months later they still hadn't shown anything, then all of a sudden BANG!, cards are shown, and released.

All AMD have done since last year is waffle, and shown their cards running a couple of games, and a benchmark, how the hell is that getting them the much needed sales that they need, to start taking marketshare back from Nvidia, that they want to do.

and yet here we all are talking about it - increasing exposure.

This thread remains near top discussion and passers by keep seeing that amazing $200 price tag when they visit. The thread also has way more comments and views than the competitions latest GPU release threads.

...Just saying.

At this point, I am just assuming people are deliberately setting up false expectations. AMD are currently targetting the mid-range. Vega is going to be their high-end new generation cards. There might be a 490 but it still wont be a flagship card. People who are buying a 1080 are not the target market for anything AMD have led us to expect at the end of the month. The closest to that is CF solutions which can let you better performance than a 1080 in some scenarios, but that doesn't make them comparable cards. What AMD are doing is offering an (apparently) absolutely fantastic mid-range card. And yet this thread is nothing but post after post after post after post of comments about Nvidia's current highest-power card.

Normally a bit of cross-chatter I would understand and even enjoy, but this thread is being buried by posters who do nothing but post about Nvidia at a constant high volume of posts. They are burying this thread in Nvidia 1080 discussion and at this point I can only assume it's deliberate trolling or attempt to pump Nvidia.

Even though AMD might release a 490 even though the only hint we have had is that they published a price range which could easily just be the 480 8GB or an unnannounced 480X, we all know and have known for a long time because AMD have said so, that right now they're going after the mid-range market.

There's bound to be cross talk though. Comparisons will always be made.

From my point of view I'm cardless at the moment. My initial plan was a 1080 (too pricey), backup plan was a 980TI (second hand or reduced). The 1070 has now entered my thoughts as the better bet (new tech, batter resale etc).

I've followed the two Polaris threads carefully. The new card (480) has been compared at some point performance wise to a 280X, 390, 390X, Nano, Fury, Fury X, 970, 980 980Ti and 1070. All this is really confusing as I'm looking all viable alternatives (except CF 480s).

As it now seems the performance is a bit lower than some of the expectations I'm wondering what's going to fill the gap between the Vega and 480? Are the Fury and Fury X still in the range for the foreseeable future?

Released lol, tell that to those 400th in line for a 1080. AMD will release with plenty of stock making everybody who wants one happy.

Spot on. The way AMD release always ends up with big delays whilst they get the performance sorted. 12.11 drivers were 10 months out before the performance matched the cards and the same with the Crimson drivers.

Release and get them in machines and the rest will come in time.

Thats another one, drivers, it just takes them too long to get their performance to where it should be, look at the Fury X, when that came out, it was only around the 980s performance, now, its left it behind, and is where it should be, up with the 980Ti, matching it, and beating it, but its a fat lot of good now, when the new cards are here.

RX 480X Ashes of the Singularity @ 4K result.

Not standard settings but a decent framerate though

edit:
The same user also has the Polaris @ 1080 tested about 1 month ago at the same settings. Strange thing here is that the fps is almost the same as for the 4K result.

So what would you rather?

Get the card out quick which needs more driver improvements to get better performance (possibly affecting reputation from early adopters)
or
sort drivers out first and release the card later (possibly losing sales)
or
a compromise, somewhere in the middle (my preferred option).

you know that we are 2 weeks in after 1080 release, and retailers still have no stock ? most pre-order ranging from mid june to late june, launch almost 1 month ahead of general availability, why would AMD rush to market ? they have time to get the stock ready and have the drivers ready, and it will be released with no competing card for a fair amount of time.
and you look like blaming AMD for what ppl make up as rumours or whatever delusions they have, AMD from the start set polaris mid 2016, and their cards are releasing 29th june, right on time.

we could see the card with a power draw of 90W under load :D

they said in the slide of the ashes of the singularity benchmark better price performance+ efficiency

which would mean 2 cards also draw around 180w or less :O

I'm really interested to see what sort of OC can be achieved if 90w is the average power consumption.

The 1060 was rumoured for a July release so AMD might not have the sector to themselves for long.

Just out of interest, can anyone think of an occasion where there has been a launch announcement of new cards where the top end card wasn't the one shown? And I don't mean where a faster card has arrived at a much latter date.

I still reckon the RX480 is the X version and the other Polaris 10 cards will likely be the R480, RX470 and R470.
