Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

The 6870/50 were launched on October 22nd and the 6950/70 arrived nearly 8 weeks later on December 15.

I do agree with your premise that there is no hidden/secret full fat Polaris because every GPU release in the past has concentrated on promoting the higher end parts. Though AMD might be deliberately obfuscating I highly doubt it but it might just be a possibility.

Pretty much every single GPU release in the past few years has seen AMD one upped by Nvidia.

  • 6970 was hyped, but a few weeks before release GTX580 drops in almost unannounced.
  • 7970 was released with far too conservative clocks (925 when 1000+ was possible) This allowed GTX680 to exceed 7970 on release even though overall it was a worse spec'd GPU.
  • 290X is eventually ready to beat Titan and GTX780, but a few weeks later Nvidia springs 780Ti to ruin AMDs party.
  • R9 Fury X is hyped with HBM and as overclockers dream yet is beaten handilly by 980Ti in price/perf and VRAM. Not to mention overclocking.

Basically AMD's every move has been anticipated by Nvidia and maybe this time they have learned their lesson. Though I doubt it. :)

Would AMD be able to keep it completely secret? There don't seem to have been any leaks.

Forgot about the 3dmark pic.

I still think theres going to be a RX 490X making an appearance at $299 within the next month or so. Looking at the slides, they said these cards would be priced up to $299...well with the RX 480 coming in at $199 that in itself shows they've something else up their sleeve.

having owned most of them cards.

the 680 gtx was slower than the 7950/7970
the 6950/6970 also were great cards.

obviously they have a idea what both are doing they wouldnt be billion dollar companies would they ?

often the case is most cards are pretty close to each other if we honest.

what often swings us is heat drivers and price. brand loyalty also can be blind.

Totally agree but if both companies have ideas what each are doing why did AMD execute so badly in each of those occassions. The relative performance on release of the Nvidia chips and the timeing undermined the AMD releases.

That's my point.

Yeah, otherwise what is the missing $300 GPU?

P11
RX 450: 889 Shaders 4GB @ $100
RX 460: 1024 Shaders 4GB @ $130

P10
RX 470: 1536 Shaders 4GB @ $160
RX 480: 2304 Shaders 4GB @ $200
RX 480: 2304 Shaders 8GB @ $230
RX 490: 2560 Shaders 8GB @ $300

That would make a nice lineup for Amd,lets hope there all onsale on the 29th:)

money restrain for AMD, better spies for nvidia.

?? I'm confused. On release day of official amd reviews etc it was confirmed by amd that 285 wasn't the full chip. If on release day of polaris 10 amd confirm that the rx480 is or isn't a full chip then that's when we'll know.

Edit more examples of my point
Like I said in.this post a while back.

Yeah, same here. They've lost me. I think you answered their question with the 285. And besides, AMD have explicitly stated that they're pursuing a strategy of targetting the mid-range market. We know this.

It could be that the 480 is launching first and a 485/480X or however they are naming parts now will be released later.

It could be down to yields on the node.

Nvidia releasing very cut down mobile parts this soon for GP104 along with the poor numbers at release show they are having issues with yields and are looking to recuperate losses.

This a fact then is it?
