Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

Not just that we were having a fairly solid discussion on estimation on the 480X possible speeds and that disappeared quickly.

We know price range - for Polaris - 200-300.......we know 2 cards; 4 gig and 8 gig and prices for that. Which leaves.....what is at 300? *using dollars*

if we can use baseline 390X/980 speeds is just about where 480 will fall; that means whatever is at 300 could be baseline Fury or possibly FuryX speeds.

Of course this is all conjecture....and honestly as we've seen with all other AMD cards - the performance will improve - where 480 could move from 390X/980 speeds to possible nano speeds.....and whatever 480X or higher again will move higher *see we can have a discussion on topic persay* :D

The biggest problem with this thread is the news. We have seen a pre-release demo and that is it and we still have a couple of weeks before release. Nothing else is being said about the card, which makes for dull reading. What I find annoying is anything that isn't positive about AMD in this thread ends up with accusations of fanboy/troll and that just makes the thread look like a playground at primary school.

Hopefully we get some more info soon but in reality, this is going to be a long couple of weeks. Just try and be grown ups and stop with the silly accusations.

Welcome to the Internet! I think it's fun debating this stuff. Even if some people do tend to get a bit carried a way it is just fun and games.

well if we dont see anything related to these in next week i would be very surprised with the biggest gaming event of the year going off.

E3 schedule

So, apparently E3 is Tue-Thu, but companies organize/host events before that. Which events are the most likely ones to yield some Polaris-related updates?

Surely the PC Gaming Show on Monday is the most likely for AMD feed the press with a bit more Polaris info? However, Microsoft is presenting right before that. Do we expect any details on the XBox update and details on the processing power in it? There's also events by Sony and Nintendo the following day, but I doubt we'll hear much about their plans in hardware.

Is it safe to say that whatever more info we get will be at the PC Gaming Show with nothing else after it?

Can't help but think that AMD are single handily putting cash in Nvidias pockets RE: the 1070 launch assuming they do have a 490 in the pipeline. If AMD can release a "1070" spec card for $299 they are really missing a trick as the 1070 launches imminently. (for much more than $299).

Anyone see those 1070 prices this morning? wow... Nvidia are mental.... If the benchmarks prove that 2 x 480 bests a 1080 in games other than AOTS, then that 1070 price is ludicrous as for the same you may get 2 x 480 which will blow a 1070 away..

This is all hypothetical of course as we dont know the price of the 480 or its actual real performance, but if the leaks are any indication, then well... Nvidia have dropped the ball

but Nvidia have plenty of room to drop prices IF the release of the 480 has any effect on their sales, in the meantime they can make hay while we still don't actually know that the release date of the 480 is the 29th of this month, just that the NDA lifts then

if the amd 480 pricing is as said and the performance is right then they have a winner. it will force the 1070 to drop the pricing.

also many will think well for nearly double the price nahhh...ill just get a 480 which will for 99 percent of pc gamers be fine.yet save 200 quid.

i think the 1070 price will drop £50 in first month alone.

If they do this they risk angering everyone who overpaid within the first week or two. People who pay for the FE obviously don't care but people waiting for potentially cheaper non FE models being told the price would drop after only a few weeks would definitely not be happy.

MultiGPU is dead.

NVIDIA wont alter their pricing, the 480 is in a different market segment. People who would buy a 480 are far less likely to buy a 1070. Even less so for the 1080.

The 480 will greatly outsell GP104 on day of release since there will be far greater stock being sold to a far larger target market. Nvidia rushed gp104's launch, it is obvious from various issues and very limited stock. It would not surprise me if they were also selling engineering samples to boost stock considering the current parts are using pre mass production gddr5x.

Wonder if Nvidia were taking the approach that people only have so much disposable income and its better to get in first and get that income before your competitor?

Where as AMD have targetted taking large market shares, it could backfire on both to be fair, however it seems Nvidia have stock issues and large prices which is deterring a lot of people.

Now we just need to see if AMD can come with something competitive at a low price point and lots of stock, pretty much AMD need to have a 970 moment.

Will depend on markup, if the 1070 has been marked up by UK retailers no reason why the 480 wont be either.

Hoping the 480 does very well personally and we do have competition

I didn't think there was such a difference in price between 4 and 8 gig versions, at least in the USD pricing
