Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

Yanks don't pay sales tax. They always brag about it.

They do, it's just different in each state.

Well if you convert the $199 and $232 and add the VAT, then add the same percentage gouging as they did to the cheapest 1080, then the polaris card will come in at £175 and £200.

Not all states have sales tax, which is why everything in the US is quoted pre-sales tax.

Anywho, for the UK, $199 + VAT + 10% for handling =

£185 for 4GB RX480
£210 for 8GB RX480
£275 for Mystery $300 card (RX490 ???)

I would be surprised but very pleased if the 8GB drops under the £200 barrier

they did say under $500 for 2 of them which would suggest inc vat a price of just under £210 + "insert terrible exchange rate here" making it roughly 215 so I would guess at £219.99 which is a solid price anyway.

Can anyone clarify to me if they actually said they'd have a $300 card or if $300 was part of rough range (to shake off competitors)?

Lisa Su said Polaris had a range of cards from $100 to $300. They've only announced $199 and $229 cards, so why mention $300 if there wasn't something there.

If i was AMD right now, given the price of the 1070, i would reveal much more about the 480 and any other cards on Monday at the PC gamer thing @ E3.

Benchmarks, prices, TDP the whole shebang, really twist the knife Nvidia just stuck in themselves, even if the cards are still only coming on the 29th, give people the info now and those that were on the fence about 1070 might hold off, although it seems a lot of people are upset at the price, you can garauntee many will still buy it at that price regardless.

If AMD want to put the hurt on Nvidia, now is the best time to do something, while everyones still raw over the Nvidia prices....

It doesn't matter people will be qued down the street for them anyway. Its G-Force you know.

If the pricing of the 1070 is true at £400+, then Nvidia have just handed AMD a massive opportunity and incentive to get their act together and get back into the game.

They might, except there is the unknown 1060 from Nvidia waiting in the wings.

IF and this is a big IF, AMD release their 480 and it trounces the 1060 and is cheaper and they also release a larger 480x/490 thats close to the 1070 and also cheaper then well its a massive win for AMD.

If AMD are adamant that they are pricing their cards for the markets and giving people tons of performance for that money then its a massive moment in the GPU industry i feel. If they can afford to offer big performance for little money then Nvidia will have no choice but to compete or lose market share.

really twist the knife Nvidia just stuck in themselves....

Nvidia stuck a knife in themselves? It's a solid gold, diamond encrusted one if they did. Most people have just accepted the price, some have complained but bought one anyway, or will buy one and some people are actually defending the new prices.

There are very few people who have complained and will actually stick to their guns and not buy.

AMD wishes they got stuck with a knife like that.

Indeed, they are currently selling 1000's of gpus at silly prices with no competition.

They are laughing all the way to the bank.

Its true that Nvidia have the sort of fan loyalty that will pay almost anything for anything Nvidia.

lucky for the rest of us there is still an alternative, or so we hope.

AMD really really need to announce if there is a full Polaris card on the way.

All they need is a card around Fury X - 980Ti performance, with high perf/watt, for under £300 and they are laughing.

This is true, but theres a lot of angry fanboys on forums right now, the problem is AMD has nothing to offer or compete with right now, if they did then i would think the market share Nvidia enjoy right now would dimish somewhat.

The problem is, Polaris is still an unknown quantity with regards to actual performance, we could be in for something groundbreaking but equally we could be in for another Fiji moment....

Im hoping we get something brilliant for once and at a lower price, anything that forces Nvidia to drop its prices is a good thing, as right now they are only going to get worse.
