Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

dont think ill be going anywhere near nvidia for a few years if this pricing holds. i paid £260 for my EVGA 970 the 1070 that is suppose to be the same level of card is like £440. lol not a chance.

Two cards were announced - 4GB and 8GB. Any others seem to be pure speculation.

Agreed, the AMD slides said aiming for mainstream prices which were typically $100 - $300. They didn't claim Polaris would have GPUs all along that price range.

So Polaris could simply be less than $300 at it's most expensive. My expectations for RX 480 is around Fury/Nano speed with some overclocking. Any more is just icing at the expected price.

Nvidia seem to have priced a lot of people out of buying a 1070/1080, AMD have a massive chance now to claw some much needed market share back

+1

It needs to be good though. If it's as good as the rumors suggest then people should jump on it as the prices are starting to look rather stupid. I doubt it will offer me much as a 290 owner but for those that like price/performance in this bracket, they should get behind AMD to keep things reasonable. PC gaming has always been expensive but to me Nvidia are starting to take the willy wish and AMD are not much better by upping there prices to not look like a cheaper brand. This to me is a step in the right direction if the performance is where it should be.

If AMD has any sense, & let's face it, their PR team doesn't, and there is an RX490 they should now say so now. Or if performance on the RX480 can get anywhere near peoples' hope for the RX490 then they should do it & announce it on the 29th when the NDAs expire.

By all appearances its going to be a cracking card for the money but seems to me there is a large gap in the GPU hierarchy for AMD to fill. Will have to wait and see what they fill it with. :)

I am worried that due to the GTX1070 price/performance it means AMD or at least their AIB partners won't price it as agressively at launch as they should. It could be quite possible the AIB RX480 8GB cards are more like £200 to £250 and they would be still better price/performance than a GTX1070.

:(

RX480 8GB was always going to be £200-250. That's what $229 converts to + vat + handling + custom coolers. Now if it comes out >£250, then we're being gouged.

I can see this happening all too easily.

These prices seem to be completely out of AMD/NVidia's control, they set a MRSP and the AIB's, distribution, importers and retailers just seem to run with whatever they like.

Unfortunately its only a suggested retail price.

It's going to be an interesting conclusion to the month.

With Nvidias pricing strategy in the UK... £400 for £1070 and £600 for 1080, it does make me wonder what AMD will do.

Lets assume based on current speculation the RX 480 8GB falls somewhere between 980 and Fury X.

Then the "speculated 490" falls slightly above the 980Ti (Especially towards DX12 games).

If AMD keep to an aggressive pricing strategy, we could see a 490 card around the £260-£270 mark.. A good £140 cheaper than the 1070 with close to performance... Nvidia will have to react, just like theyve done before and adjust pricing.

Again i'll repeat, all speculation... Whatever happens this is great for us - the consumer.. Because allot of people (Including myself) don't care what brand GPU they own (Nvidia or AMD), they simple want to buy a card they feels represents the best value at the high end.

I'll never understand why argue, debate and bash Nvidia or AMD. Surely the primary thing is which one brings best card across each segment. So if Nvidia have a card which is £30-£50 more expensive and slightly better than AMDs offering in same segment, it's may be worth the extra.. If it's a good £100-£150 difference, surely logic suggests AMD is the one to go for.

Ehh. The US MSRP is already going to be £200 minimum for the reference models. Of course the AIBs will go up to £250 for premium models.

The exchange rates, regional markup and price gouging in the UK applies equally to AMD and nvidia cards.

For many, sure. But other people might have specific performance requirements they are trying to hit and thus need the extra power.

I've considered the 980Ti to be pretty much the 'base' for what is good for 1440p/60fps at High-Ultra settings. Anything less than that might not be great for 1440p users. So whereas a 1070 might well scrape by that barrier, a 480 might not. And could be worth spending the extra money.

Gotta remember that people dont buy cards based solely on performance-for-the-dollar.

$200 = £140 roughly at the moment, vat at 20% = £28, which puts the total at £168.00 and gouged to lets say £200, where are you all coming from with the £250 figure, what am i missing?
