Radeon RX480 4GB can be flashed to 8GB version.

Whats going to happen to ram speed because 4GB versions run at 7000MHz and 8GB 8000MHz. Is the implication that it's just limited by bios?

If it's true that they are all 8GB cards than they are using exactly same gddr5 which is only limited by bios.
Mine doesn't have any problem running above 8Ghz when manually overclocked.

Can't wait to flash mine with 8GB vbios.
Bought it as soon as they showed up and paid 175.99.
If it works than it is the best value card that money can buy.
Also gpu-z is showing 88.9 asic quality on my card which seems very good if it's accurate.

What I don't understand here is why would AMD even put the 4 extra chips on the 4GB card. Surely a waste of chips if you are selling it as 4GB.

They've seemingly discontinued the 4GB SKU so it sounds like it was just done as a launch thing, possibly to enable them to say it's launching at whatever price when the 8GB one will be more expensive and ultimately, the only one available long-term.

They probably realised that it's better to just sell the 4GB RX 470 for ~£140 and then the 8GB RX 480 for ~£220. Or maybe we'll see a price drop of the ref 8GB 480 in a few months.

On the PCPerspective video, they said AMD only made one reference PCB design so they could get through validation faster. That’s why the 4GB and 8GB cards are the same.

this makes no sense even from a production point of view.

Surely it would cost more to put that memory on every card which would cut the profit on the 4 gb cards. Since you've already paid the production cost then no one really cares if you flash the bios or not and use the 8 GB there. it just doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

Would be good to know if anyone with a 4 gb version can flash it to 8.
