raid array

What have you done so far? Just plugged in two drives? First step is to go into the Raid 'bios', it varies from motherboard to motherboard but it is usually a key combination (for Promise Fastbuild it is 'ctrl' + 'F' keys pressed at the same time) and you build the array in there. After that you will need to format your array, this can be done from within Windows if you are creating the array as a secondary drive. If you are trying to boot onto it then you will need to format them as part of the Windows set-up and also have the Raid drivers ready for when requested in the installation process.

//edit it might also help if you said what you want to use the array for and what components you are using.

so far i have cloned old hard drive to external hard drive then disconnected old hard drive then connected new hitachi deskstars which i want to use in raid0 for peformance
my mother board is an msi k7n2 delta, my intension was to boot clean then transfer from clone to raid set up also do i find raid drivers on mother board disk

You can find Raid drivers on the motherboard disk or there are usually more up to date versions on the motherboard manufacturers website. Booting from the cloned disk might not even be possible (and a clean install is usually better anyway) if you haven't already installed the Raid drivers prior to the cloning.

when i boot with new hitachi deskstars connected as raid it does not tell me that i need to set up an array by hitting ctrl and f for instance why is this

The key combination varies from controller to controller, I was just giving you an example but it should tell you in your motherboard manual exactly what it is and also it should flash up while booting. Have you enabled Raid in your bios? For mine it was enabled by default but it might not be for all. Another thought, you do have Raid capabilities listed for the motherboard? Not all support Raid, it is rare now but there are still a couple which don't support it.

my board supports serial ata interface ports ser1 and ser2 first generation 150mb/s but i brought sata 2 300mb/s hard drives would this matter i looked in bios for detection but could not see anything

What is the motherboard? I might be able to find out more if I have the manufacturer and model number. SATA drives supporting 300mb/s are designed to be backwards compatible with motherboards that support 150mb/s.

What model of Hitachis are they? If they're T7K500s then we might have a problem - they ship from the factory set to SATA300 but to set them to SATA150 you need to use Hitachi's Drive Feature Tool if the controller can't auto negotiate the speed (which might be the case here). The problem is that the drives need to be recognised by the controller so that the DFT can work - catch 22 if you only have the one machine.

i have the raid array set up now with a clean install of xp
i have set up a partition for program files but how do i set it so programs go there by default + how is the best way to transfer everything so xp and all other stuff is as was without having to install all prgrams again
