Ramadan 2020

Why's that then? Lovely weather the year round, tax free salary, amazing places to go and see and plenty for kids to do.

Oh and no-one stabs anyone here for the fun of it. Kids aren't forced to think like lgbtqstuvwxyz sheeple and it's probably one of the safest places to be.

Regarding the other comments about halal (permissible) / Haram (forbidden) for things like smoking etc, not sure if it's baiting and want a reaction or genuinely interested but here goes.

According to Islamic jurisprudence the basics of halal and Haram are determined by what's written in the Quran (holy book) and the Sunnah (actions and ways of the prophet Muhammad pbuh)

Such things like alcohol and pig meat are prohibited according to these so you will see Muslims will have an extremely negative reaction when asked about this. Many Muslims however, particularly from western influence, will dabble in alcohol drinking and non halal meat eating.
If they do such a thing that is their choice and that is between them and God.

Other topics such as smoking are not explicitly mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah and as such are a bit of a grey area. Some will say as it's not prohibited and that means that it must be OK. These things generally fall under a seperate ruling, in that it is not liked (Makruh) and as such many Muslims will engage in said activities.

At the end of the day faith and religion are incredibly personal things and to point out and state things like 'it's Haram though' are usually said to get a reaction. If individuals do wrong that is between them and God. If anyone wants to help it should be done in an appropriate manner rather than trying to bait people or just state things bluntly.

If people genuinely want to find out, a discussion can be had but alas in my relatively short time here I have seen many a thread spiral into a mess as some posters can't keep it civil.

Anyway, hope you guys made the most of this month. Stay safe and have a blessed Eid.

Fantastic post, thanks for writing that down.

It’s interesting isn’t it, religious differences are firmly intertwined with cultural differences, you can do or say something which might be perfectly normal to you, but could offend someone of a differing religion / culture something silly. As a South African living in my third country, I am intimately familiar with this concept.

Holland was the worst for this, the Dutch have all sorts of customs and traditions which I wouldn’t even have considered when I moved there: dinner is a 6, shoes off when a guest in someone else’s home, jacket off too. These little things wouldn’t even have registered with me but for some Dutch people it meant it was my last time in their home.

No offence or disrespect was intended yet that’s just how it was construed. Bit odd, and as the filthy jerb stealing immigrant I was constantly on the back foot.

Eid Mubarak you guys, hope you have a good one and thanks for making sure there’s more bacon and booze for the rest of us :D

Well to be honest that was a highly stupid comment from Sho and deservedly gets a negative reaction.

I mean just because someone comes and sits next to me eating their bacon sarnies etc, doesn’t mean that I should demand them to leave my vicinity.

It’s Muslims with those sort of mindsets that really ******* annoy me and give the religion a bad name.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't sit next to you whilst nomming on bacon, pork or whatever but yeah, your comments were spot on. It's simply down to mutual respect/tolerance.
Haha! See now I'm the other way, I've almost managed to get OP to try bacon a number of times :D The closest was filling his mums house full of fried, smoked bacon smell first thing in the morning... he even asked for a plate to be served up to him, alas he did not take that bite although I have heard from sources that he has since tried it and rejected it for his turkey twizzlers or whatever they are.

I am an ass though

Lol it’s fine dude, doesn’t bother me either way. It’s just that I don’t see the point of making such a big deal over something minor

Live and let live is what I live by.

I often felt guilty when I'd eat bacon around a muslim colleague. I always apologised but she always told me to stop being stupid! She and her family actually brought some food to us last Friday which was a lovely gesture.

Eid Mubarak, Guys. You are stronger than I!

A salaam alaikum

No probs, thanks for taking the time to reply.

Thing about cultural and religious norms is that often they become one and the same. I found out to my peril when I got married and the in laws were full of the Indian sub continent cultureligious crap! It's a story for another thread but suffice to say my dissection of their cultural practices and contrasting them with basic Islamic principles didn't go down to well at the start.
They love me now so it's all good! ;)

Regarding this whole bacon thing. I get why some people are uppity about it.
But to be honest our religion teaches tolerance, it teaches respect and there's a way to deal with things. Particularly if you're in a non Muslim country there's no harm (in my opinion) to sit next to someone who is eating pork or drinking alcohol.
If it offends and its easy for you to move then do so. Way I see it a Muslim in a non Muslim country has to make some sacrifices and this in turn is their struggle / test / jihad (oh crap did I just use the J word?!).

Let people practice what they want to practice, at the end of the day even in the Quran it says 'you have your religion and I have mine'. As @Yas786 said, live and let live.

Yes you are :D. And bacon is completely over-hyped, you put it on a pedestal for far too long.

It's the difference between personal and political, a difference that is significant but often ignored. Especially by devout followers of a political ideology (which includes at least almost all religions but is not limited to religions). Personal is what you choose for yourself. Political is what you choose for other people. It's very common for people to make the personal political, but they're not the same thing. In a similar vein, a couple of my coworkers are vegans. As a courtesy, I asked them if they minded me eating meat in their vicinity. They didn't. Their veganism is personal, not political.

Ah typo, meant to say people. It makes people behave worse, and you just proved my point, "I don't care about others human rights because it doesn't affect me"
My observational point of view on the way a country chooses to behave has nothing to do with religion though? And when I said I was OK with it, I said it doesn't affect me or my family - I meant that in a way to show we are not being adversely affected. At no point did I say I didn't care? In fact this month we've been going out of our way to help some of the people that are persecuted out here.

I'm not sure I agree with religion making people behave worse. In fact I would say most religions fundamentally teach a basic principle of peace and tolerance. You get some that misconstrue the message and turn it into something else and the hardcore crazies that exist everywhere but the vast majority of people who follow a faith to it's true meaning and message are quite peaceful.

Nah man, you must not have had it done right - I'll cook you up a nice bacon & ketchup bap next poker night for a real taste, I'll convert you to the side of swineology one day...

In all seriousness, you drink and smoke and "companion" transvestite little people for your extra income... why skip on the pork? It's the best one of the bunch! Well, maybe slightly behind a he-she dwarf... but only slightly!
