Random 3D printing chatter

Surely it just stops and prompts for a new reel?
No its pretty cool, on my Creality K2 combo, as long as you have two reels set the same material and colour (even if it isnt the same colour really) it will auto switch over when one runs out. Its a great way of finishing old rolls and not losing good prints mid way neither. I am genuinely surprised more on here aren't using Creality kit given how popular the ender series were too. The windows app as well as mobile and web interfaces are spot on too imho.

Ams on Bambu does the same, but even if you "run out" it just stops and prompts you to load another reel. There is no requirement to have extra loaded to avoid a failed print

My K2 does the same but If I know Im near the end of a roll I can save time by having a second loaded and ready to go when the first runs out mid print.

Similar to dismantling the AMS and associated hubs to take care of jams, once you have had to do it 5+ times it becomes a lot quicker! Virtually all my issues have been due to badly cut filament at the end of the roll having a severe cusp that gets stuck.

Am I a muppet for swapping between two hardened extruders for PLA and PETG prints? I only do this so I have a clean extrusion path for the filament I use. On a P1S it gets a tiny bit tiring swapping on occasion.

If you like doing unnecessary things then no, you're not a muppet. If you don't like doing unnecessary things then yes, you are a muppet.

No reason to swap for PLA or PETG.

I'd swap and keep a separate nozzle etc for hardened materials like glow in the dark PETG or carbon fibre reinforced, as they caused premature wear.

Technically when swapping parts you should really recalibrate everything incase the flow rate is slightly different

I’ve never come across a hardened extruder, but a hardened hotend doesn’t need to be swapped when changing filament types, at least not on a P2S. I installed a tungsten carbide hotend when I first got my P2S and have switched between a wide range of materials without issue. The only problem I ran into was with PA12‑GF, where the filament sensor jammed, fixed with a simple cold pull. It may just be the excellent Bambu Lab firmware, since it automatically handles purging any leftover material.

Cheers folks. Yes my mental thoughts of this come back from when I was using Ender and Guider 2 printers before the Bambu era at work. We commonly used PLA for parts but occasionally used PETG on parts where a small degree of flex was required. Everytime I switched filaments, I'd have to go through the nightmare of purging a lot of material and re-calibrating the things. I ended up just buying a second machine in the end, one for each filament type.

When I got my P1S/AMS last year I just randomly decided to swap between two extruders because of that experience. I highly doubt I'll go beyond normal Sunlu Matte PETG tbh.

Don't randomly do anything, spend 30 seconds googling or asking ChatGPT, it will save you a lot of time.

Count me in as intrigued

I just cashed in all my Markerworld credits and bagged an X2D. That's now the 3rd free printer I've had from Bambu (A1 Mini, H2C, and X2D). My Kickstarter X1C is still kicking it (although it's Trigger's broom at this point).
