Any clever / kind soul able to decypher & summarise what the following does for me pretty pretty please? (taken from second post here: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=331726 regarding installing a wifi dongle driver)

git clone https://github.com/cilynx/rtl88x2bu
cd rtl88x2bu
VER=$(sed -n 's/\PACKAGE_VERSION="\(.*\)"/\1/p' dkms.conf)
sudo rsync -rvhP ./ /usr/src/rtl88x2bu-${VER}
sudo dkms add -m rtl88x2bu -v ${VER}
sudo dkms build -m rtl88x2bu -v ${VER}
sudo dkms install -m rtl88x2bu -v ${VER}
sudo modprobe 88x2bu

Nothing too complicated really.

Clones the driver from the git repo
Switches to the cloned folder ( locally )
Grabs the version number from the dkms.conf
Syncs the driver folder to the kernel source folder.
Tells dkms about the new module
dkms builds the driver module
dkms Installs driver module
Loads the driver module.

Had something similar with FreBSD and the realtek 2.5g driver. Had to use my phone ( ue0 / usb ethernet) first to get online . Jumped through hopes. Joys of *nix.

thank you for that. appreciate it. What would it do if you didnt have git installed?

reason i ask is i foolishly ran it and it started seemingly making a cache / index of everything on one of my drives. needless to say I panicked and killed it !

It should've thrown up a an error saying 'git' not installed. If you copied and pasted there's a chance rsync starting copying the files from the directory you ran the command from to the newly created rtl88 folder in /usr/src. Although I'm surprised if it did, unless you ignored the git warning and just copied and pasted each line independently rather than as a whole.

Check and see if that folder exits ( /usr/src/rtl88x2bu- and clean up if it does.

Been experimenting with Curve undervolting my 5090 using LACT on CachyOS. Doesn't appear to be stable at a similar VF curve to that I have set under windows with afterburner.

Have tried to retarget 2750MHz at 900mv with a flattened curve thereafter and it wants to sit at ~2600MHz/895mv.

In any event it's nice to have less power draw under linux even if it means leaving some performance on the table or using a slightly higher voltage than I could in Windows.

Another day and another basic 101 Linux lesson this time in how to config fastfetch. I'm not sure why, but when I've looked at this previously I struggled to get my head around the syntax and editing the .jsonc file correctly. I used the main configuration wiki at github, but what I found more helpful was to look at other people's configs and then use trial and error to generate small changes. Although I didn't change too much I got to this basic new config just built on the first theme that came to mind.

I suppose if I wanted to the next step would be to really go to town on what I want displayed, find different logos and start to get fancy with different sections etc. Although as someone that tends to run quite vanilla this might do for now.

So tonight I spent a few hours pulling my hair out wrestling with Samba, SELinux and all manner of things trying to access a shared folder so I could stream videos from Bazzite PC to iPad. In the end, I was irate with Google Gemini as none of its suggestions were working. Then it spouts out "you can always try SFTP/SSH next time!"

Always curious, I followed the TWO simple terminal commands it gave me (enable service, allow permissions through firewall) and lo and behold the iPad connected immediately and I streamed a 4K video across the network with no fuss at all. I do blame myself as I didn't tell Gemini what I was trying to achieve, just that I had to get SMB fileshares going - that's my Windows background. But now I know this SFTP method, I shall not forget it in a hurry.,

Eugh, SMB and Linux isn't worth it.

NFS or SSH is much simpler.. although NFS permissions can be quite alien if all you are used to is Windows (Like I was!)

In other news...I imaged my windows drive running on my my fatest nvme and kept a copy on archive storage. Flattened it for CachyOS to go on as a daily driver.....eek.. what have I done :o :cry:

I was pleasantly surprised how much easier Arch Linux is to get back configured with almost everything neatly living in .config and only requiring a copy back. Doing the same in Windows has you all over the file system and in the registry.

I'm agog at well ext4 filesystem seems to be compared to NTFS. I've been moving files between disks willy-nilly, downloading multiple files simultaneously to the same drive and the most "non-contiguous" files is at 0.2%! I thought it had been cheekily defragging in the background but turns out it writes files in a whole different way to Windows.

Re: SMB/NFS; for years I always used Samba on my Linux Server. Simply because I had Windows PCs and it's what I knew. But a few months ago when I rebuilt my Debian 13 Server I decided to try NFS which fit given my move towards Linux on my main PCs. And after getting my head around it, it meant just configuring '/etc/exports' rather than '/etc/samba/smb.conf'. I know NFS is more performant, but my usage is so lightweight I don't notice it and I have to configure fstab on any Linux client to use either so not much difference there. That said I'm sticking on NFS now I've set it up.

At the moment I do have some annoying Linux bugs:

1. Obsidian spellcheck has stopped working due to an electron bug which is waiting a fixed. Makes a really good text editor close to useless.
2. Youtube vertical glitches on my Fedora 44 KDE PCs due to an MESA bug which is awaiting a fix to be applied (link). Spend a bit of time on this chasing deadends before I worked it out.
3. On top of that I played around with Arkenfox vs. Librewolf which mucked up my longstanding config on Librewolf. AF is essentially the same thing as LW, but I have realised the latter uses newer versions of Firefox than the Firefox versions in the Fedora Repos (you can change this though), removes the AI rubbish and is easier to update. However I lost the ability to have a separate homepage and new landing page for new tabs/windows on LW. I don't believe I can get it back without extensions.

Saw this on reddit, but now seems to have been confirmed that 8BitDo have launched a web-based version of their software for some of their controllers. Based on the screenshot I'd guess some older controllers may not be supported and there is clearly more work to do. Also would be nice to actually get Linux native versions, but it's a starting point.

I always like 8BitDo controllers, particularly for retro gaming.

8BitDo say Ultimate Software Online is their attempt to make things easier for Linux gamers, no need to download a standalone firmware updater app now (which wasn't available for Linux anyway).

Posted in their official Discord they said:

"We’re starting a beta test for a new web-based Ultimate Software, designed for users who have difficulties using the Ultimate Software desktop app, such as Linux desktop users."

Over 2 years on Linux. I see articles on the latest Windows update and it makes me glad I made the switch. It's funny to look back at my posts on linux and see how my opinions have changed about things like the AUR or distro-hopping.

I'm waiting for Asahi Linux to get suspend power management working well so I can ditch MacOS too. The latest Asahi blog post is all about that so fingers crossed! MacOS 27 is an AI everything update and I want out.

I'm also hoping for one of the various Linux phone projects to be any good. I can do banking via a browser but things like Whatsapp need a real solution.
