While that makes sense, it's impossible to prove because there aren't reliable numbers. There isn't even a simple definition of "gay" to begin with even if we had reliable numbers, which we don't.
Strictly speaking, your statement is almost certainly wrong because of the increase in population over time. It seems rather unlikely that when the population was half what it is now there were as many gay people as there are now - that would require homosexuality being twice as common in the fairly recent past.
We assume that the proportion of people who are homosexual is constant, but we can't prove that. How can you find out how many people were homosexual in England in 750 AD? Or Spain in 2000 BC? Or anywhere else at any time, really. Even nowadays in a society with a more reasonable attitude, it's still not possible to be sure of accurate numbers. While sexual orientation appears to be determined before birth, we can't prove that and we don't know how it happens. It's possible that changes in environmental factors might change the proportion of people who are homosexual.
