Raptor Problem - unable to recognize

So i've been using a 36gb raptor since 2005, and up until a few days ago things were perfect.

My raptor is now not recognised by my board (asus P5K). The BIOS doesn't see a thing and neither does windows. This all happened out of the blue after a BSOD and i have some data on there i need to get. Since windows can't see the drive, any recovery programs i've tried can't either.

Anyone got any ideas? I've tried different SATA ports but still to no avail.

Help appreciated, thanks.

No weird sounds at all, and i tried reseating both the cables and nothing. WDM doesn't recognise it either. Does it look like i'm screwed?

does the drive power on? (put your ear really close to it and just plug in the power -when pc is on)

if it doesn't spin up, try unplugging it, then dropping it on the floor & kicking it a bit

worked for me about 3 or 4 times in the past

as i said, i've had it happen with a few drives (none were mine thankfully), i guess the motors had jammed or something

it was a serious response

trying that before RMA'ing is a better idea, at least if that works you can get the data off

if it is spinning up, try different SATA port/cable, and make 100% sure that the ports are enabled in the bios

I can't hear it spinning up - are raptors supposed to be inaudible when they start?

If it's completely jammed, is it worth going through one of the data recovery companies listed on the western digital site? There's some data i could really do with on there, or i will have to spend days getting data that won't be the same again. I'm guessing an RMA will just wipe the drive and not fix my problem.

An RMA will get the drive replaced. Didnt realise you needed data from it. In which case there is the freezer method (Wrap in polythene till its completely airtight then chill the drive overnight) its a temporary fix, and will not last long, but it may give you just enough time to get the data back.

What I really meant bledd. (that . was confusing!) was that if it rmas and they discover it has been dropped / abused then they might not accept it. I shouldn't have sounded so blunt. No offence intended.

they're mega loud, you'll hear it fire up if it's working

just give it a more than gentle tap against a desk (side on)

also, check the cable you're plugging it into is working
