Hi guy's just got me mitt's on another raptor WDC WD1600ADFS-75SLR2
When i installed windows said needed formatting. But only came up with 16GB?
But list's it in smart scan as that drive but shows 16.01GB.
Tried formatting again but still same. speedfan shows as 160GB in listing.
Funny thing is that smart scan when i did sector scan shows up more blocks than my 150GB raptor?
tried putting details in WD site but don't come back with drive? but does on google and as 160GB?
PS i'm now bald!lol

Nice find! Not too many of these around. Guessing it was second hand? Possibly been improperly partitoned or even short stroked. Tried checking to see if there is any indication of unallocated space in Windows disk management? If so you should be able to extend the 16 GB. Short stroking would need a low level tool to reverse but Seagate or Samsung's HDD tools can do this. Probably others too but I know these can be used to define the drive capacity. WD's own tool has had this feature removed but may be worth running it anyway and see if it flags up any problem with the drive.

Hi cheers ziggy yes 2nd hand i swapped for a seagate 320gd 7200.10.Which was giving me 58% raw error in smart?.
Opened in properties and just gives me a pink disc with a thin blue line.
Think need to see if anyones got that software.it seems a lot quieter than 150gb one
That makes so much racket thought it was trying to get out?lol
Many thanks for getting back and info/help.

Sorry, should have been clearer above. You need to check in the disk management module. Not general properties. This will tell you how much unallocated space you have available. I suspect it might be a short stroke, given you are only seeing 10% usable but it might be as simple as the former user creating a small partition.

If you are Win 7, Right click on My Computer > Manage > Storage > Disk Management, or if XP then enable Admin Tools in the start menu and look for Computer Management ......Storage, etc.

If the drive has been short stroked then you should be able to reset the full capacity with one of the following tools.

Sammy ESTool. Used this myself. Will work on a WD.

Or many use Seagate's equivalent.

I would have recommended you use WD's own tool but in their wisdom they saw fit to remove the ability to change drive capacity from the latest version of their HDD tool.

I think it's worth checking to see of the drive is indeed set to use less than max capacity because those many of those rare high capacity Raptors will have seen themselves end up in a server type environmemt, where the practice of short stroking is more common.

Hi ziggy i'm on vista.don't know what it's origins are? just came out of pc shop near me.and i just saw it as he was going to give to someone for there pc so told him that it wouldn't be much good as a general drive and swapped for my seagate.
Going to have a look at those things you sent thanks for that.
Do you think other one's on way out? has it is so noisey like someone with a bad snore.
Has pc keeps freezing when doing things.

Let me know how you get on with those checks. Not sure if your other drive is on the way out. Raptors are noisy as hell at the best of times. You could try running the WD diagnsotic tool and check SMART attributes. Fantastic swap for the Seagate BTW :)

Cheers buddy just wish it was working fully has thinking of using as C drive instead of other one as getting lot's of prob's with freezing and things all the time.and it's giving me the pip. have post on psu but checked volts with meter.seem ok? so jusy going through it all and you thought a woman was hard work?lol

Hi sorted out raptor did have a partion onit. mate told me how to go about dealing with it so now formatted and should be ready to go?
Thinking of as i said swapping over to see if any better.

If you are not sure about the other Raptor then yes, swapping over to see if it makes a difference would be a good idea. If you can be bothered with a re-install. You could image your drive and transfer the OS over to the new drive. If you don't have software for this then you can d/l WD's version of Acronis which is on their website. I'm pretty sure the noise you are hearing is normal. As I said, Raptors are very loud drives. As for the freezing problems there could be any number of problems that can cause this. Swapping the drives may help to diagnose a fault but the problem could be the same on any working drive if it is some other hardware or software issue so a re-install might be unavoidable at some point. I do recommend you run WD's diagnostic tool also just as another check. Easy to use. Burn ISO to DVD, boot up, and only takes a few minutes for the quick diagnostic. Good luck, hope they are both working, and if that's the case RAID0 is definately something to consider.
