Raptor worth it ?

I'll check the jumpers tonight..... when I set up the array I used the "Easy RAID" feature on the mobo and I think it defaulted to the standard stripe size, not sure what that is though ? Perhaps I should reset it with a different stripe size once I work out what it is at present.

Windows, Games etc are on the Raptor, Music / Video / Docs are on the RAID array.... I think therefore I would be better off with a larger stripe size ??

Ok maybe you can help with these speeds they seem low did the long test on both my drives, they both 8 meg cache ones too a 200gig sata and a 36 gig raptor.

Maxtor 6B200MO BANC1B70
Random Access 13.4ms
CPU Utilization 1%(+/-2%)
Average read 53.7mbs
Burst Speed 136.4mbs

Random Access 8.6ms
CPU Utilization 2% (+/-2%)
Average read 49.5mbs
Burst Speed 105.0mbs

Short test
Maxtor 6B200MO BANC1B70
Random Access 13.8ms

Average read 52.1mbs
Burst Speed 137.0mbs

Burst Speed 105.2mbs

I have posted in another thread but as this about these seems a good one, my raptor has started sounding ill of late like a saw cutting metal grinding sound it comes and goes, was going to replace that and the 200gig with a 320 sata2 16meg cache what i was wondering is why my drives are showing such low scores in the tests and would this perform a lot better than what i currenly have.

People are forgetting Random Access times - the Raptor is below 8ms on good days - some of the newer drives are like 13ms - this difference plays big in some programmes - eg Music programmes!

My 74gb Raptor is pretty nice, like you I wasn't fussed at all about boot up times, but in games I seem to notice some sort of difference, maybe it's just because I want to see a difference though? I'm not sure.

lol

To follow up on this, I'd like to post some HDTach graphs.

1. WD Caviar 80Gb 7200RPM SATAII 16Mb Cache

2. 2x 74GB WD Raptor 10k RPM SATA 16Mb Cache (RAID0)

Ill add a pic of my 8mb cache raptors

Was thinking about the 16mb raptor but Dr_Evil screen shot above isnt too convincing to change, thought they would have been faster :o

Yes, its does look bad doesnt it.

Either that or yours is looking good.

What boards are you and The Doc running on?

The Motherboard can make a massive difference to the speed of the HD, so perhaps his Mobo is crippling his HD access?????

8mb cache raptors?

turn of NCQ, the drives dont support it, worth a shot.

Seems to be my only answer for these things ;)

Exactly what 2 drives is the graph above for Trox?

Raptors are good but I got a feeling these new Vista hybrid flash/hard-drive memory based Hdds will proove even faster.... Even a 10gig drive would be worth it perhaps just to whack on Vista and then perhaps your fav game ;)

Those are my 2 x 8mb cache raptors m8y

Did you do a short or long test?

How comes you have more throughput than my 16mb cache models? also your avg access time is lower than mine...

... looks like one of my raptors is dodgy - tried combinations of 3 hdds and with one drive out of the loop I get 245mb/s burst speed and 119 average read - still not quite what i should be getting - but better
