Ok, so i wiped the USB and installed raspbmc back on it, and again it shrinks it to 70mb, this normal? Would you also say its wise to wipe the SD card as it will try to boot off that first? I can only guess if you have 2 raspbmc's plugged in, it'll choose the SD card first.

Sounds like that's the windows partition, the rest has been formatted as linux which your PC cannot see.

You can search for some partition programs to fix it, or just format it (using command line)

Last time I read anything about it - something was being developed but it only worked for US accounts.

ah bugger, that's a shame, currently using my pc to link to my TV would be handy to have the pi attached and always on instead of booting the pc.

Hi all,

I was hoping you could help me. I am running Raspbmc on my Pi. Occasionally I use it for streaming video from the internet.

I would like to run all these streams through a VPN for security purposes.

Can you tell me:

- How can I set up the Pi to run through a VPN. I can't seem to find any settings for this

- Can you recommend a reputable VPN that is fast ie won't slow down the streams ?

Thx

Any advice from anyone ?

I find my Pi very useful. Can't understand why I put off buying one so long.

It's doing well as a RASPBMC media player since I attached a 2.5" USB Hard drive to it, tweaked the config file for a HDMI force and fixed a few permission issues. It's also doing a grand job of torrenting all day and night when needed and saves me having my 120W main rig switched on.

Still haven't made a enclosure for it but have managed to reuse a 2A 5V old router (actual 5.04v) SMPS that holds voltage well under load with minimal ripple.

I'm doing something useful with my Pi for once, will post details when all the bits are here... Just got to figure out how it's going to work :D My order of components seems to be on the (very) slow boat from China :(

FFS I've still not solved my problems... I switched from raspbmc to OpenELEC and at first everything seemed to be perfect - no more intermittent freezing during playback, no more loss of network interface on startup, everything working 100% correctly for about a month or so...

And now all of a sudden the last few days I'm beginning to get some freezing/stuttering again just like it used to do under raspbmc... I just don't understand what could be causing this to happen - especially how it can be totally fine for a while and then suddenly turn to crap again

Can anyone suggest anything I can do to try and work out what's going on?

raaspberry question

How is the quality during playback, I mean during GPU assisted playback ?

Could you for example compare the picture quality to a pc ? and would a 1080p Man of steel hd trailer run smooth ?

I am surprised to see people saying they use it as torrent download machine, surely it would not be powerful enough to que up all your torrents, and surely the arm cpu performance cant push out much download performance either....

Sorry if you've already answered this, but have you tried a different power supply? The one I used to use (came with my HTC Desire), although rated for 1v is not stable enough to power a Pi reliably, and I would get network dropouts and SD card corruption. A 2v power supply seems to have fixed this problem.

This had crossed my mind (I believe you mean 1A and 2A though ;)), I've tried running it with the 2 supplies I have at home (one is a 1A and the other is 1.2A) but perhaps I should invest in the highest current supply I can find at least to try and rule it out

Funnily enough I spotted one on modmypi just now which claims to be 2A at 5.25V, which they claim ensures that the supply always provides a stable voltage of at least 5V and high current. Since it's specifically made for the Pi I'll probably just go for that one

Have a look in the Home Cinema forum, there is a thread in there about XBMC and a lot of it refers to the Pi and what it can do. Yes it can play back 1080p HD very well. Looks good on my 42" Panasonic TV and with the Pi and XBMC supporting CEC HDMI inputs my standard TV remote controls the Pi.

I cannot answer the Torrent question as I only use my Pi for XBMC, I do have another SD card I swap out and use that card for messing about trying Pi routers and Pi distros.

thx oxford will look into it, I think if the gpu is used properly then 1080p should be good looking and sharp and high, but not 100% sure on it may dig around and ask the AV forum guys on it.

Yeah am surprised to see people on here saying they use theres as a torrent download machine, surely the low cpu speed would barely push a few meg !

could be wrong...

I tested one for a weekend

Every video I threw at it played flawlessly, looked the same as my amd htpc output.

The slow menu's were a show stopper for me though. They took soo long to navigate through. I imagine this could be easily rectified with a skin made specifically for the Pi; they need one with smaller jpg preview pictures and no animations in the menus. I'm sure with these additions it would make it a far better experience for the end user.

That's my 2 cents on it.
