Raspberry Pi 5 Announced!

Can't help but feel that they have added too much crap that most people don't need, which hasn't helped the price.

At £30 or whatever the original was, it was worth a go whether you had a specific use for it or not. £60 is too much (especially once you factor in any additional items you may need - PSU, SD card, Case etc)

Yeah that's my thinking, the original premise of the pi was to provide cheap hardware that was pretty functional.

Memory has come down in price quite significantly, so it feels like they've kept adding mostly useful features to keep the price up.

We have Pico's and Zeros for the cheaper alternatives.

That's the problem though, they're not alternatives. The Pico's are microcontrollers which are on a comparison level to esp32 boards, but at a higher cost. And the zeros are several generations old and still sporting 512Mb RAM which is mostly useless these days.

They need a core model without the additional fancy components that keeps the price low, and then anyone who wants the extras like the PCI connectivity has the option with the higher cost.

Neither are alternatives for the reasons above, or even just as basic as wanting proper ethernet for reliability.

The ideal for me is just a basic pi that has ethernet, usb and a single hdmi. Nvme instead of SD card for storage would be ideal. PoE should be standard so I don't need to spend money on a psu or an add-on.

I don't need dual hdmi, I don't need 1x camera connector, much less 2. WiFi and Bluetooth are probably done better via USB dongle for those who need it. Also why not just put a standard cr2032 battery holder instead of wasting time designing a circuit for a Non-standard rechargeable battery?
Having to have a fan to prevent throttling is another added cost, and isnt ideal if you plan on using any Hats.

Feels to me like Eben has lost his vision of what the raspberry pi origins were. There's lots of SBCs on the market now, and it looks like they're trying to compete by offering these high end solutions.

Will the RP4 still be sold? I wonder if the 5 isn't so much a replacement for its older sibling but an evolution meant to diversify the Raspberry Pi range? The RPF intend there to be a different Pi for different needs rather than one Pi does everything?

99% sure they will, as they have industrial/commercial customers who have committed to specific models (and even if newer models are backwards compatible, they often have to be tested/recertified).

The 3B and 3B+ are still listed as is the Pi Zero, all of which have long since been superseded.

(https://cpc.farnell.com/raspberry-pi/rpi3-modbp/raspberry-pi-3-model-b/dp/SC14882 show a lead time of next year however)

Supposedly 2884 of the 2B are available:

Can anyone recommend a decent list of items to get? Obviously a 5, but what a case, power supply, optional stuff.

I'm a total newbie but would like to see what they can do.

In particular, I would like to replace a PC I have that's currently acting as a media PC for a 4K TV, but in general I am interested in discovering what a raspberry can do.

The Raspberry Pi official charger is probably a good bet. Pimoroni have their Ninja case or you can get the official Raspberry Pi one which has a fan built-in. You can pair the Pimoroni case with a separate fan if you don't want the official case. I think Pimoroni are doing a bundle of everything you need for the RPi5.
