I am building my first system and I have decided on this layup or another i cant decide?

Asus AW8D
Intel P4 980 Dual-Core 3.4ghz
2GB Crosair RAM
Sapphire ATI Radeon X1900 GT Slave and Master
2x 160GB Maxtor Sata-II HDD
650W PSU
X-Galaxy Gamer Case

What you guys recon and if could recommened changes if think bits are wrong... My budget is abot £800 so dont go massive!

Hmm well... the graphics is good. Scrap the rest.

-Get something core 2 duo based and a motherboard to match, i'm not too knowledgable on that so you'll have to wait for someone else to spec you up there.
Take a look at the ocuk core 2 bundles section. There seem to be only a couple of different motherboards but as i said i couldn't say which is best and i'm uncertain which support crossfire.
-Get a proper psu. Needs to be made by Enermax, Antec, Tagan, Seasonic, FSP or OCZ. Nothing else and certainly not unbranded which is what that one is i imagine. Something in the 600w range.
-Swap the maxtors for a better brand, imo maxtors have reliability issues.
-Never heard of that case but make sure you look at performance and practicality rather than just looks.

Hope thats some use to you, sorry i can't be more specific. Welcome to the forums btw. :)

right, cheers for the advice mate...I think! lol

can anyone suggest a kick ass system for around the £800 mark then, I think the X1900 GT card is ok for the graphics but you guys can come up with the rest... I want it for gaming and mostly downloading large files..

cheers

I would imagine its a Q-tec? In that case PLEASE go with the advice above :p

You will benifit from a Core2 Duo and there is such CPU as a 980 Dual core!

Heres what i came up with...

You have some left to buy a case and pay for postage... ;)

i agree with gong down the x1900xt route, good choise of power supply, but theres been a few issues with recent batches of seasonic PSUs.

also I would try and go for the 250GB drive with 16mb cache over the 200gb, for only a few £ more.

Can you check your PSU, it is running crossfire so it can't be THAT bad. Check the make/model and see how many amps it has on the 12v rail(s).

Hard drives, not great but worth keeping.

Heatsink - Scythe Ninja is great, freezer 7 pro etc.

RAM - Check with CPU-Z to see what type and kind it is, if it is 667mhz then you could keep it and use the money saved to buy a 6400/6600 instead.

Graphics - The GTs are good cards, I would keep them but buy Zalman VF900 coolers for them

Case - Obviously depends on what you like, but something from Lian Li/Silverstone would be a good choice.

If you get Xez's spec you'll have to overclock it otherwise its poor value for money.
Do you intend to overclock, because if not we'll have to rethink things a bit, for example you may not need such a good (read: expensive) board, which would save some money to perhaps get a better cpu which would make sense if you weren't going to overclock it.

Its also stretching the budget somewhat although its a killer system.

I have to agree there i wasnt sure if he'd be overclocking but then id of over budget :( If you arent going to overclock you could also downgrade the memory to maybe corsair value DDR2?

Im Just starting trying out overclocking so not really sure what im doing, but I may want to use it in the future so yea...keep that in mind. Also what about the OS, isnt that another £200?

right ok I am thinking abot Xez's setup but is it worth upgrading the CPU to the E6400 the 2.13ghz one?? Im confused abot the core 2 duo, is the E6400 better than say the 3.2ghz P4 dual core?? (I think im just been a dumbass but can someone clear it up plz!) :D

Yes, the core duo is infinately better than P4 dual core. Higher FSB and L2 cache. Plus the fact that P4 dual core (Pentium D) is essentially 2 P4's stuck together.

If you can afford it, get the 6400. As with any other type of chip, the higher the 'number' of the chip, the more performance gain you'll get from it (if that makes sense).

You need to read this: The megahertz myth
Cpu speed is not measured in hertz and never has been.

I have heard that its worth getting the e6400 over the e6300 because you get a higher multi and these clock so well they tend to be limited by the fsb.
