RC cars

After a very long hiatus from RC having raced competitively for the best part of 15 years and enduring the cold and wet weekend compounded with a few days of cleaning, maintaining and rebuilding ready for the next event the inevitable happened and my son mentioned the words RC trucks..

Not wanting to go straight into nitro again and subjecting park dwellers to the “unique” noise they produce I had a look into electric and found 2 ideal choices and before I knew it I was back into RC I do of course blame my son entirely but seeing the smile on his face reminded me of a hobby I once loved dearly!

Now while I have no intent of returning to the nitro competition I do admit simply having a big robust truck hammering around and over everything was a good bit of fun.

Does anyone else partake in the RC side of things?

Yes! I returned to racing Electric 10th scale just after lockdown after a nearly 20 year gap!

Electric has really come on now we have brushess motors and lipos, and most UK outdoor tracks are now astro turf. A lot of nitro tracks have closed now - or have restricted operating hours due to noise complaints by the neighbours.

Depending on where you are in London you might want to check out:

There still an on road track at west London raceway and another at Crydlstal Palace

DMS Racing also race indoor all year round: https://www.dms-racing.com/model-car-club

There's a thread here: https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/posts/37063532/

Super I’ll move myself over to that thread rather than starting a new! I’ll have to dig out all the old photos :D

Crystal Palace is around the corner from me, and I have heard of Eden park but never been due to the class I used to run

You are not wrong ref the nitro either two tracks I used to run at regularly have closed which is a real shame.

Crystal Palace is under threat of closure due to redevelopment of the park where the track is located - but I think they are still running for the moment.

Eden Park is a fantastic track, banked corners, big jumps and some interesting features. The astro turf they run on is good as well. They do race stadium trucks there - but 1/10th 2WD has become the dominant class almost everywhere these days

Does anyone one here have the spare sprue parts that don't get used on a TT-02? My sons TT-02B has a broken front lower damper attachment - the bit that attaches to the lower suspension arm and I think these parts are only used on the TT-02B. A new sprue is £8 plus postage... It's part V2, the rear one is X2. I'm happy to swap back the parts a tt-02 would use in exchange. If anyone is interested PM me then I can start a thread in the MM so it's all above board

I'm not big into RC. Had a Tamiya Mini Monte Carlo kit I built with my dad when I was a kid (wish I still had that! They're usually spendy when they pop up) but I happened across a video of these Taiyo/Tandy/Radio shack big roaders and it brought back a huge tactile nostalgic memory of one I had as a kid. I had to find one and this one popped up in really nice condition, won it for £26. I distinctly remember playing with it for hours, even when the battery had died. Remember all the little tactile bits, such a strong memory I had to find one. I think there's a photo of with me with it somewhere too.

I have a HBX Ravage 1:16 basher thing which is quick and obviously hobby grade, and also have a cheap 1:12 toy grade buggy. I plan to upgrade the Big Roader and toy buggy to proper steering and ESC, maybe stick some lights on the big roader. Something me and my son can crawl around the garden. shame the big roader doesn't have suspension but it should still go well.
That was my first RC car too! i saw one at a carboot couple years back but didnt buy it - always regretted leaving it!

Now posting in the correct thread!

Was heavily into RC especially 8th Rallycross which I did for around 15 years with a few breaks inbetween it had taken me all over the UK and abroad so have some really fond memories of it but the time sink to get the car ready for the weekend then the event itself, coming home late on the sunday and repeating did take a toll and I eventually called time on it. Found my old race car (kyosho MP10) which I won many things with and this was the last race I done from memory i was with Kyosho for the last 6 years

Ready for the season at the time

Many great memories with that car

This was the car built for the next season and I never ran it in the end

Fast forward multiple years and my son decided that it was RC time and I must say i took minimal convincing oddly, rather than nitro I went for some more park and people friendly electric trucks and I must admit the simple blasting around, over and jumping them has been highly enjoyable but more so the big smile on his face which reminded me why I fell in love with the hobby in the first place all those years ago!

The Maxx is mine and the Arrmma "submarine" is his :D

Still looking for a place to really give them some air, Beckenham place park is our only venue at the moment!

I used to race electric rc mainly at Oldham and Rochdale clubs. I used to end up finishing either winning B group or middle of the results in A group.

I'm not sure if either club is around these days. This was over 20 years ago. I'm not sure what the Oldham club was called. The Rochdale one was Roch Valley.

I wish the racing scene was bigger in the country. There isn't much for the young ones to do these days.

There's definitely less clubs around compared to 20 years ago, but there should be a few round your neck of the woods

Bury Metro springs to mind immediately: https://www.bmrcc.co.uk/

What classes do you race?

I can't remember if it was 1/8 or 1/10. I was a kid back then.

But I raced on indoor tracks and offroad outdoor tracks.

I used a Kyosho Lazer ZX. I think it was 4WD.

Lazer ZX would have been 1/10th 4WD

10th off-road is one of the most popular classes in the UK - 2WD is much more popular than 4WD now.

Cars are a lot quicker these days, hobby is probably a bit cheaper overall as well due to the introduction of lipo batteries and brushess motors

I remember the 2WD Schumacher was the main competition against me indoors. They were very fast around corners though could be more difficult to control.

The modern 2WD competition buggies are all mid motor now, so they drive more like 4WD buggies of old in terms of the lines you take.

4WD isn't so popular at the moment as they are an absolute handful with the speed and power we have now - so they only get a decent showing at really big tracks
