RC Planes

It really isn't, JST is only rated up to 7A, plus you only have 22awg going up to it. Fine on small light stuff but even parkflyers easily go over 7A. Look at the below image for info on various connectors.

Yeah I always resolder deans onto them, shame as I do like the connector.

hmm people are using batteries with jst connectors in 250 size helis with motors like this
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=8143
and
this
http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=8144

with 25amp ESCS

obviously the JST will get a bit warm from the resistance and so its not as efficient as deans but there doesnt seem to be any issues with it

JST? Those two you linked to are connected via 2mm bullet connectors!

[TW]Taggart, Nice find on giantcod, being ribbed will certainly help getting them apart!

Weird, I've ordered with HK at least a couple of dozen times and NEVER been hit for customs.

Spill it out now, the secret ! ;-)

I use small screwdrivers a lot (I fix, service and repair cameras) and my best screwdrivers are a one if the cheapest set you can find online.... The key is to use a sharpening stone and/or a small file to "redo" the tip of the ones you use so they fit the purpose at hand...

yea the motors are, but people have been using batteries with jst connectors on the esc i mean..

xt60 connectors are probably a lot safer and look a lot nicer though

Well the turnigy 9x transmitter has arrived at HK and that part of my order is reserved, but I still have the 2 extra receivers and the quad carbon frame out of stock, so more waiting for me!

Really. Very cool. Slightly jealous now as yours is significantly cheaper than mine. :D

You'll need that Smartieparts board to make the most of it though, have you ordered that? That only took a few days to get here though, so I guess you can wait to order that.

Mine is still in customs, so more waiting for me too! Woo! :o

I don't really need an extra board, I'll solder an ISP connector on it. I'm a bit of an AVR expert as it happpens ( I'm the author of https://gitorious.org/simavr ) so I'm not worried at all :-)
I did order the EL backlight kit tho, and a Rhino 2620mAh low discharge to convert it to lipo, with a small dc-dc converter to get regulated 5V with very little waste.

A couple of years ago my wife bought me a radio controlled plane, I think it was the Top Gun Park Flite Super Cub. It came ready made but I had to attach the wing and the control rods from the servos to the control horns. That's where the problem was, the control rods were only a thin metal rod which flexed. This meant the elevator, ailerons and rudder didn't move particularly smoothly. The first flight was ok, but during the 2nd flight a tree jumped in the way :(. Whilst the plane was made from foam, it was the engine mount which broke, so it has been unused since. Anyway, having read through this thread, I think I'd like to get another plane and try again :).

So, from the first page, I was looking at this one: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__16549__HobbyKing_J3_Cub_RTF_.html

Apart from the slight size increase, will there be much difference between that one and this one: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__17335__Piper_J3_Cub_1400mm_EPO_PNF_.html

If the one above is good for a starter, how about this one? It looks nicer than bright yellow: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__19055__L_4_Grasshopper_1400mm_EPO_PNF_DE_Warehouse_.html

That's the one I was first looking at when I started this thread. I went for an entirely different one that's all foam. The others are probably better placed to help you...

...as mine still hasn't left customs! Argh! It's in their international hub thing since Monday. It's starting to drive me batty. :p

BusError, can you just whazz a 2s battery in the 9x and wire it up? Will it be OK?

Cheers BusError, I'll be doing that. Do you have a link or a description of what I voltage convertor I need? DC-DC thingy? I can add that to my shopping list.

My package has finally cleared customs. Surprise surprise, I'm due to pay the charges. Who'd have thought it? :p

Does mean it'll be another week before it arrives, bit of a shame. Unless there's some serious bargains to be had from HobbyKing, I might just stick with UK/EU shops from now on.

Also, quite handily, I found an old small 15" TV in our cupboards over the weekend, and it runs off 12v. I also amazingly found my old 12v adapter, found the right plug, got some suitable cable and got it running off a spare car battery we have. Works perfectly and will be ideal for FPV shennanigans.

some of the hobbyking stuff cant be bought in this country or will cost you a hell of a lot more, some of the servos used in RC helis cost $0.99 in this country tye exact same servos cost £5 etc

ive just had to order a pinion because i cant find 2.3m mod 0.4 ones in this country anywhere!
in all it will have cost about 4$ for the pinion including shipping , cheaper than buying a pinion in this country lol.

on weds you will probably get the parcel force letter and if you pay it online straight away you will probably have your stuff delivered on friday.

or you can just take the letter to your local depot which is where your parcel will be

Yeah, you're probably right arknor. Just didn't realise it'd take this long to get the goodies. ;)

I will/am still waiting on my batteries, which will be frustrating. Might just get one from Giantcod in the meantime to tide me over. Anybody had anything shipped from HobbyKing when it wasn't a tracked parcel? They shipped it straight from their warehouse.

BusError, can you use a 3s battery in the 9x's?
