RealID to show Real Name - WoW, SC2 ...

Call me paranoid but IMO this is just the start of things to come.

Governments worldwide have been calling for less anonymity on the internet, it's just a matter of time before we're required by law to show our real name on OCUK and other such forums.

Yes, I am ready!

Seriously I like the Real ID idea and just love (after 5 years in the WoW forums) the fact that I can now see who the *censored* is that is mocking me or calling me names! :D

Why do you care? It's just the WoW forum. If someone is flaming you or being a tool to you just close the browser and read something else instead. Putting names online is a massive invasion of privicy, and I can think of one occasion in my life where having real names on the WoW forum could have caused me serious grief.

Why don't Blizzard just moderate the forums properly rather than just pop up once in a blue (geddit?) moon to post a pointless update on why a realm isn't up and running.

Sounds more like a cost cutting exercise than anything.

That one hit the spot. They have "smoothed" out a lot of issues in game that were the usual bottlenecks for support, yet when they implemented all these it went from an average of 3 hours response time to 4 days!

But then again, 11 million people playing... I mean PAYING you £10 per month and you can have all their needs automated... who would not want to have that business cornered?

Oh and it seems like I did not get burned by this, Tefal! ;)

huh?

I said posters like you, the ones who moan about the trolls etc and have a go at them, you're the ones that will be target for things no one is going to target the trolls.

They haven't even implemented this yet have they so i don't know how you can say that

for those who agree with it :)

What about this scenario: "RealID is now compulsory, and by default will try to link it to your facebook (simple matter of matching emails). Now, not only that, now you need to use it, because you will only be able to log in if you have RealID active"

Want to opt out? Well, you cannot because that is what Blizzard requires, do not like it, tough luck, don't play.

But why all the hassle? The answer is simple: more micro-transactions, targeted advertisement, sell gear, sell xp scrolls ... this is the model instigated from facebook. In their minds, why should they spend hundreds of millions in hiring the best game designers, when you need just need a handful of mediocre coders to make "FarmVille"!

As I said, I will not support this model going forward, and all my preorders with Blizzard have been cancelled.

If they wanted to change it to be micro-transaction based they would just do it rather then messing around with RealID.

Micro-transactions really aren't bad at all if done right anyway.

Now now...you know that WoW has its hooks into you, regardless of what they do you will go out and buy the Cataclysm expansion and continue playing. Will be interesting to bookmark this thread and come back just after Cataclysm comes out and see how many of the people here saying that they wont touch WoW because of this actually still play :)

"After we mentioned earlier about Blizzard's plans with the Real ID reported , all forum users first and last name will be displayed in the future that there is also a first victim of the system: Community Manager Bashiok. Although it is not yet displayed the Real ID in the forums, so he wanted to defend the new system in the forum and posted his real name.

Within minutes, we knew almost all the important stages of his life, his phone number, address, age, preferences, etc. And even the name of his wife, the roommate in his home and the school of his children could be identified. In addition, some users published pictures of his house - Google's Street View is thanks. This obviously shows that the Real ID is quite questionable.

Bashiok now put his Twitter account. His phone number was also blocked. All of this should therefore have come to Bashiok very surprising, which he did not expect during the publication of his real name. Whether Blizzard will reconsider the matter with the Real ID, but again is rather questionable."

Common sense wins for a change.

Moderate the forums properly, issue suspensions which also carry over to the user's game accounts for repeat offenders.

Hello everyone,

As a result of those discussions, we've decided at this time that real names will not be required for posting on official Blizzard forums.
