RealID to show Real Name - WoW, SC2 ...

But almost anyone you meet in real life could do the same thing yet they don't. People do indeed act up on the internet but almost all of them would stop at actually doing anything to you in real life.

Like I said, if someone REALLY wanted to track you down they could no mater how much effort you went to. Your identity is already all over the place.

I guess this is all a bit of a pointless discussion really anyway. Blizzard aren't going to force you to use your real name so i suppose the forums will be full of people called "Joe Bloggs1".

because there are comebacks in real life there aren't when you live in a different country/are on the internet.

This has happened to such massive degrees before it's made the international news when 4 chan did it to one guy.

Yeah I suppose you have a point there.

Like I said though, unless Blizzard are going to force you to put in your real name there's nothing to stop you using an alias. Does rather defeat the point of RealID but oh well.

4chan have lost people their jobs and even got someone jailed IIRC, some who deserved it and some not......

Every extra bit of information you hear coming out of Activison/Blizz just hammers in the nail of confirmation that Diablo3 is going to be massive fail - not because of the game itself, but because of everything Act./Blizz wants to force on the players, likely including subscriptions.

Blizzard now joins Ubisoft and Activision on my list for boycotting their products :)

Because they are trying to remove the trolls from a forum? Why not Boycott something worthwile?

Oh and Blizzard = Activision

If they really wanted to remove trolls they could actually start suspending or banning people and their battlenet accounts from the forums and games. It's not as though they can't afford to hire enough moderators.

Boycott something worthwhile? Boycotting something takes zero energy and time.

Why don't Blizzard just moderate the forums properly rather than just pop up once in a blue (geddit?) moon to post a pointless update on why a realm isn't up and running.

Sounds more like a cost cutting exercise than anything.

There are three points in this discussion: Anonymity, privacy and game design. I cannot care about the first, I do not need it. The second is precious to me (and one of the reasons why I did not want ID cards in the UK), and the third is why I just cancelled my WoW account.

I do not think I am very far away, but expect (in 12-18 months time) to see microtransactions taking a new qualitative direction. Also, full integration with facebook.

Activision has decided to cater for the Facebook generation and that is fine, I am out :)

ps. Any recommendations for MMOs before SW hits the shops?

Blizzard putting an end to be pretending to be a female Gnome and getting people to give me money because I'm a girl and don't know what I'm doing :(

/sigh.

I got one dude to pay for my epic mount at level 60 on my Gnome :(

I don't see how people are defending Blizzard with the argument that, "you don't have to use the forum". That's not an argument! I'm getting annoyed at arguing with valid points and some people I know just say "but you don't have to use it".

Aaargh!

See now if you knew who they really were you could go after them with a sledgehammer and relieve some of that pent up frustration ;)

Quite a few funny youtube videos popping up, the usual Downfall one ("Hitler hears news about Starcraft 2") has had some new subs put up and the Jay and Silent Bob clip is an example of what some nutters may do ("Battle.net Real ID makes it possible"). However my favourite is a subbed video from a russian club ("Blizzard Real ID Troll").

Can't link any because they contain swearies, but should be able to find them easy enough, vid titles in brackets.

Eh... I don't really care about this either way. What I don't understand is, right now you can absolutely find out a person's name if they've spent any amount of time on the internet. Facebook, Myspace and Twitter have made it even easier. What makes this so different? Are WoW forum debates so heated that they always lead to someone getting killed if said person's name is available on the very same page he's posting on?

I mean, I'm not in favor of this change or anything, but I don't quite understand why people are so mad about it. Sure, if you work in law enforcement or something like that where you absolutely must stay anonymous, it might be an issue (although then the question is, do you REALLY need to post on the worst forums on the internet, when there's so many alternatives?).

Blizzard still have control of what they do and this isnt the only bad thing they have done recently its been a collection of things since the name merge

Because people post under usernames which are often hard/impossible to link to real names.

But now it will be easy for the weirdo to find the girl in his guilds fb page and do something like this

wont be playing blizzard games if everyone can see my real life name. remember the case of the dude who got knived in game in cs then spent 6 months stalking the person who did it and ended up walking up to his house and stabbing him when he opened the door.

This will make it a hell of a lot easier for the nutters to do that.
