Really annoying...

Timbob has a good point there and it is for that reason I always slow down and check what is happening as it could be there has been an accident, something in the road or even a policeman with a haridryer around the corner. Generally though I will say it is a member of the 'I think you are going to fast brigade' and there is nothing but it isn't worth risking not slowing down and checking just in case someone is being genuine (it does happen now and then!)

Whilst I agree with what MrLOL says to a certain extent about looking at what you'd gain from your overtake for me all I generally think about is if it is safe to carry out the overtake without endangering anyone. This is always going to be a subjective topic though on what people perceive as 'safe to overtake'.

I'm 30 now but I still get flashed on about 50% of the overtakes I carry out in NSL 60 limits (single carriageway). I put this down to my stainless exhaust system and induction system waking up the half asleep dawdling driver I have just passed :D I never let it bother me, I just carry on at the speed limit and have never had anything further happen after any of my overtakes, as in no one has ever caught me up and had a rant etc. It is only on single carriageway overtakes that I ever get flashed though, never on dual carriageways or m-ways where I may be passing the car I am overtaking at a higher speed difference.

Best thing to do is to just not get wound up by it. If people want to flash their lights at you let them! A car with an exhaust or noisier induction system will naturally make people think you are driving more aggresively and faster as your car is noisier so you have to allow for that a little. You have also now learnt that there are drivers out there who will do their best to not let you overtake too. You just have to wait for some dual carriageway to get past these as it isnt worth the risk. The same happens to motorcyclists. The amount of people I have had move to the centre of the road to stop me filtering on a motorbike is ridiculous, and I am talking about when the line of traffic is doing no more than 5mph!

Has it occured to anyone that maybe they are just flashing to let you know it's clear to pull back in? Truck drivers do it all the time.
