I have a 8800 gtx, but it's getting a bit old... SLI or get a newer card ? prob only got about 300 quid to spend a new card.

Q6600 @ 3.6 (will go faster)
4 gig ram
Linux OS, with Windoz for games

Asus P5K3 or P5K (P35 chipset) water cooled CPU on a triple rad (think it's the black ice one) with two crappy fans for normal running and a delta for when gaming ( i get nervous at 45 degrees....)

I'm not sure on the ATI as i have heard of problems with linux (or rumours)

I'd try for yourself first anyway, you have the distance selling regulations. I'm sure the 5870 will be supported on linux soon if it isn't properly already, it's a popular card.

At the moment, ATI seems to represent a LOT better value for money, so my advice would remain the same.

yer i've just read the reviews of the 470 and the 480 and it seems to be a coffee maker with a vacuum attachment....

I'm in two minds,,, 5870 or sli 8800 gtx to get me through a few more months.

How much can you get an 8800GTX for though? Depends how deep your pockets are too. Generally new tech is going to be a lot better, but the depreciation is fierce.

Well a 8800 GTX can be had for 80 odd quid... might keep me going for a while as i'm still looking @ bad things for the ATI stuff on linux...

oooo i hate it when i have to make a choice like this...
last time i went down the ATI route with linux it was rather painful... but the new Nvidia cards are pooooooooooo r

Why?

That may void the warranty? It's a moot point anyway, you can overclock the 5870 too.

Nope, doesn't void the warranty.

As for overclocking the 5870, very true, however the Cypress chips generally overclock to about the same speed, so there's every chance that a 5850 and 5870 will end up overclocking to the same speed.

Not necciserily (how ever its spelt :p), Asus gave you the programme etc for a reason, and people have said it doesn't, Asus still replace etc. Btw, you can do 850/1200 on stock volts, so no damage there :)

necessarily :p

Overclocking doesn't void the warranty, don't forget that ATi has overclocking built in to their very own drivers.

To say overclocking voids the warranty would be equal to say that upping the AA to 8X does too. :p

I'm surprised O/C'ing doesn't void the warranty. Certainly worth it then.

The chips clocking up to similar speeds is then a more detailed point based on experience and knowledge of those cards, which may well sway the choice.
