Received my 3080 today, now my PSU is producing coil whine :(

From what I can tell in the frantic research I’ve been doing about coil whine in the past 5 hours, is my PSU is definitely capable of running my 3080, coil whine doesn’t exactly mean my PSU is struggling, it’s just a response to the higher current flowing through it. Maybe I got a bit unlucky as like with all computer hardware, every component is different, even if it’s the same.

Coil whine is one of those irritating things that seems to happen at times it doesn't necessarily mean its struggling theres some kind of resonance between card and psu I had a GTX 1080 that howled like banshee whenever TW3 booted up did it occasionally with other titles but that was the worst. Then one day it simply stopped. It'll occur on most cards if you don't cap the FPS in my experience i.e. many hundreds of frames per second, its not new either there was a long thread here dedicated to whine on the GTX 970 that seemed to be common. Trying a different psu is the alternative different resonance etc.

I got a MSI 3080 Gaming X trio yesterday, and have slight coil whine at idle coming from my PSU. PSU is a Super Flower Leadex Platinum 850W (bought 25 Nov 2016). In games the coilwhine is not noticeable unless I'm on a menu pumping out hundreds of FPS. Strange how the coilwhine doesn't get louder at load, compared to at idle.

Previous GPU was a Radeon VII, with no coil whine at idle or load. Hmm.

It's hard to be exactly sure, though it does sound like the noise is coming from my PSU rather than the card. Though this is the first time I've had coil whine at idle (idle is 4k 120Hz 4:4:4 10Bit, so maybe more demanding than 'normal' idle.)

Only other factor is that this card has 3x8pin, while my previous card only had 2x8pin.

I'll test connecting up an old 1440P 144Hz display port monitor later, and unplugging my CX48 to see if it persists at idle.

Update. My 'idle' coilwhine appears software related. Just booted off a spare test W10 image I have on another drive, that has absolutely nothing installed bar windows, and no more desktop coil whine. Booted back to normal Windows 10 SSD, issue returned. Disabled Asus Armory crate software/services (RBG) software) and coil whine from desktop/idle has gone.

Will test more but glad it's gone!

Not sure if it helps, but I have a corsair 750W PSU, Ventus 3080, Ryzen 3800x. I hear no coil whine on the GPU or the PSU. Its currently on an open bench, so I'd hear it if it were present. The whole system draws 460W under load (3DMark Timespy)

I have a MSI 2060 super and would always get coil whine using a be quiet straight power 11 580w. I recently bought a Corsair RM750X (getting ready for a gpu upgrade) and it has cured the coil whine. There is still slight coil whine at high fps but nothing compared to what it was.

I've got the same 750 corsair PSU and it's hit a wall. It reboots when loading Doom eternal at 4K ultra nightmare and a couple other games. Only when going from full stop to FULLLY maxed out though. I've read in many other places that the 750 watt recommendation might be stretching it a bit. My PSU is like 8 months old. Peak load can be intense when going from full stop to full chungus. I've got like 7 or 8 drives in my system which might be pushing it further towards the limit. Another forum has a whole thread of people having trouble with 750 watt PSUs. I'm going for 850. Everyone else that has switched has had success that I can find online. Coil while aside I think these cards on the millisecond level are a bit more hungry then they let on at first.

Hi i’ve got a gigabyte 3070 OC and just built it - had fairly loud coil whine coming from it whilst running minecraft with high demanding shaders as a test . My power supply is RM750X My theory is a) it’s the actual power supply rather than my gpu at first thought b) i shouldn’t have my pc plugged into a extension lead with other things in it (once i took things out it massively reduced!) & I capped my fps which helped too

I had a EVGA GQ which whines with my RTX 3080 FE so tried a brand new Corsair RM850X and while the whine is a slightly different pitch/level it still makes it and is 100% coming from the PSU (as I ran them outside the case to test). So its proper luck of the draw as I'm sure I could try another RMX and it may be fine.

I’ve heard others say the same thought it was my GPU (3070) but now i think it’s my RM750X psu hm - ima test it out and see if i can bare it but might ask corsair if they can replace it

should have gone with AMD. ;)

should have gone with headphone ON. ;)

let's just pull up all the amd psu issues links

What's the reasoning behind this? Is it just because the PSU is under a much bigger workload now? Probably close to its limit? :p

Whine is caused by magnetic forces around coils. The more power that passes through the coil, the more the force, the more whatever it is vibrates. It may stop in a few weeks, it may get worse, there is no way of knowing. Unfortunately the high frequency sound bounces off various objects, which is great for bats and terrible for gamers. Sometimes, though, you can use it to your advantage and a carefully placed book can deflect the sound in to a carpet or such.
