Received my 3080 today, now my PSU is producing coil whine :(

Likely because the gpu is of such high power and the PSU is now more under load than before.

You will always get it in some form due to the high amperage/wattage nature of small pc parts.

Coil whine is something I have struggled with for a while then I put my pc away from my desk now I couldn’t care what noise it makes because it can’t be heard under any circumstance.

My only advice is to get a new higher wattage PSU so the strain is less. Undervolt the card or move the pc itself further away.

My Corsair 650W (RM650x) is running my 3080 and i9 9900k perfectly fine so I would be surprised if a decent 750W was having problems
Looks like my luck is awful, nothing new there

@tyler_jrb yeah man, my pc is like a meter away from me so that helps blocking out the sound thankfully.

So am I right in saying once you have coil whine, it’s more or less impossible to get rid off without running the risk of completely breaking your PSU by glueing the coils?

Okay so I just tested it with one regular VGA cable and one VGA daisy chain cable, just to see, and the coil whine has actually been significantly reduced.. I've heard a lot of reports to stay away from daisy chaining with these 3080's but, the coil whine is def less obvious when I use one although it is still there.
Then run it like this. As long as your PSU isn't garbage (which it isn't), it'll be fine as the cable must be spec'd to carry upto 300W (assuming it's a pair of 6+2 pin PCIe cables). Furthermore, with 3 8pin cables and the PCIe slot, that's a total of 525W of capacity before going overspec and given that the 3080 doesn't draw that, you'll not be pushing the cables to their limits.

So a 850W PSU is safe? Right?

Haha i hope so or a lot of us are gonna be buying new PSUs, with all my overclocks maxed out this thing pulls 850 watts at the wall so if my G2 cant handle a 3080 i'll be annoyed.

Its hard to get rid of, even glueing the coils may do nothing (ive tried before).

Best bet is another PSU either replacement or another model. Or if you can attempt to isolate the noise somehow. Or say undervolt your 3080.

I know how frustrating it is though hence why my pc is now several feet away in a wall cupboard :D. Honestly there are weeks on end where I don’t even look at it anymore. Do miss it on the desk but I don’t miss the whine.

I've got an EVGA 750 P2 and that's giving me coil whine as well. Hadn't noticed it as PC is under my desk and I wear headphones, only checked because of you and now I'll hear it forever grrrr!

Thanks dude

Yeah it is very irritating but thankfully mine isn’t atrocious an my computer is far enough away for the sound to be blocked out lol

I am truly sorry for this :( aha

Could it be capacitor whine?

I rma' d a Corsair PSU for mild whine and they were good about it. 2011 though.

Try undervolt it with Afterburner? That might help.

I’ve done that just out of curiosity with my ASUS TUF 3080, down to 0.86v and still got core clock set to 1950MHz and runs no problem at all!

Now uses a fair bit of less power which is nice, for the same performance! :)

I'm currently trying to learn how to undervolt, I don't really understand it lol but I think I'm starting to pick it up, I never really use curves.

First time for me too undervolting, don’t worry it’s not scary at all and is a quick change.

Just download MSI Afterburner and watch this video. Really easy to understand, hope it helps mate :)

I've got the same 750 corsair PSU and it's hit a wall. It reboots when loading Doom eternal at 4K ultra nightmare and a couple other games. Only when going from full stop to FULLLY maxed out though. I've read in many other places that the 750 watt recommendation might be stretching it a bit. My PSU is like 8 months old. Peak load can be intense when going from full stop to full chungus. I've got like 7 or 8 drives in my system which might be pushing it further towards the limit. Another forum has a whole thread of people having trouble with 750 watt PSUs. I'm going for 850. Everyone else that has switched has had success that I can find online. Coil while aside I think these cards on the millisecond level are a bit more hungry then they let on at first.

I got a MSI 3080 Gaming X trio yesterday, and have slight coil whine at idle coming from my PSU. PSU is a Super Flower Leadex Platinum 850W (bought 25 Nov 2016). In games the coilwhine is not noticeable unless I'm on a menu pumping out hundreds of FPS. Strange how the coilwhine doesn't get louder at load, compared to at idle.

Previous GPU was a Radeon VII, with no coil whine at idle or load. Hmm.

It's hard to be exactly sure, though it does sound like the noise is coming from my PSU rather than the card. Though this is the first time I've had coil whine at idle (idle is 4k 120Hz 4:4:4 10Bit, so maybe more demanding than 'normal' idle.)

Only other factor is that this card has 3x8pin, while my previous card only had 2x8pin.

I'll test connecting up an old 1440P 144Hz display port monitor later, and unplugging my CX48 to see if it persists at idle.
