I'm after a nice distro to use.

Ubuntu is out of the question, since v8.04 there is a problem with PAM and my machine, i can't figure it out and i'm getting nowhere on the Ubuntu forums.

So i'm looking for something

1. As easy as Ubuntu to install/use.
2. Preferbally with less pre-installed stuff, i like to choose what i want on my system.

I've used Arch Linux before, i *might* have another bash at it tonight, the only off putting thing is the amount of 'tinkering' i've done it once before i'm not 100% sure i want to go through it all again.

opensuse, fedora, PC-BSD, Mepis, Mandriva, Sabayon, PClinuxOS, opensolaris.

Try erm all and pick the one you like best. I wouls start with Mandriva, opensuse and fedora.

Debian? Though the PAM issue might still present. Worth a go though. Failing that, how about Fedora 12 or PCLinuxOS? :D

Nice to see you recommend F12 Rainmaker :D I was expecting Mint to crop up.

I'm thinking of trying Arch Linux also OP - let me know how it pans out :)

Since Mint 9 is based on Ubuntu 10.04 you may have the same PAM troubles as with Ubuntu.

I still think it's the best distribution for ease of use ;)

I run Arch as my desktop, it was easy to setup when you follow the beginners guide wiki page.

Running Gnome, compiz and dockbarX = sex

Nice. Ive got F12 running gnome, compiz and loads of modified conky scripts at the min - its very purrrdy :) I just fancy a change. 3 years of Fedora and dealing with rpm limitations is starting to grind on me!

Actually I respectfully disagree. ;) Fedora is a very nice distro, but early releases tend to be a little flaky. It's the same with a lot of distros, sure, but Fedora is already bleeding edge and most new releases (at least since 6) have had one or more big problems initially.

I say stick to 12 for now and see how you like it. It's "old" (~6 months), so it's well tested and any major bugs have been ironed out already. Jumping straight into a brand new release is not the best way to assess a new distro imho. See how you like it, THEN upgrade if you find it fits you. By 'upgrade' I mean format and reinstall. :)

I'm getting on ok with Fedora so far. There is no nonsense with passwords and PAM that i had with Ubuntu.

I was a bit disheartened when the update manager wouldn't work, but this was a known issue and a quick 'yam update' in the terminal has ironed out that problem.

I'm going to stick with it for a few months and then i'll have a look into 13.

Thankyou for the suggestions everyone.

Been a few days at least now.

Fedora seems to work for me, i see version 13 is out now but i might wait a while for that. I have lost the bootup splash screen since installing the nvidia drivers but i'm sure theres a workaround for that somewhere.

Fedora 13 has turned out to be a very stable release. I tried it as a dual boot on my main desktop machine and was so impressed I installed it on my home server which had been running fedora 10.

I would definitely recommend a fresh from scratch install rather than doing an upgrade though.
