Recommend me a Linux Distro.

Ubuntu is out of the question, since v8.04 there is a problem with PAM and my machine, i can't figure it out and i'm getting nowhere on the Ubuntu forums.

Any chance in giving the Ubuntu family a try?

Debian, crunchband, xbuntu, kbuntu?

:o:p

I'm glad Fedora is working out for you OP. I loaded F13 into VirtualBox t'other day and I was very impressed. I loved F8 and F10 but moved onto pastures new after that (Mint, mostly). I'm loving Ubuntu 10.04 and Fedora 13 though. Change, change, change. Don't you just love software freedom? :D

Still using it, does everything i need it to do, even more so now i have found and added the RPM Fusion repos.

Even playing games on here now, Nexuiz is quite decent. I usually play BF2 and CoD so it makes a refreshing change to just run around shooting everything that moves.

:) 'grats.

I'm going to be running Arch 64 on BTRFS when my Intel X25-M comes through the door in a couple weeks. That is going to be a tweakers heaven.

Is it worth using standard Ubuntu on a netbook, or is UNR specifically optimised? Does it come with all the same drivers as UNR, ie will it just install and go as easily as my UNR install? Would be nice to have more customisation over the interface.

I think UNR (from memory) comes de facto with the netbook interface etc installed. You can install the normal 'buntu and then install it all after if you feel like it (thats what i did when it first came out 2 years ago).

Try Jolicloud. It's based off Debian and Ubuntu, and as such has all its advantages (massive repos, stability, usability). However it's specifically for netbooks, but above and beyond UNR it contains all the proprietary drivers for your particular netbook. It detects the make and model on install, and sets up the screen/gfx drivers and resolution, 3G, bluetooth, touchpad, and (crucially) the hotkeys for your particular model. It really does feel like a "native" solution, and is basically awesome. Way better than any OEM "custom" Linux I've seen thus far on a commercial netbook.

So simple even the kids love it, but it's Debian/Ubuntu underneath so a quick Alt+F2 > gnome-terminal later and you're in admin heaven. :)

Great link Rain'. I'm thinking of getting one of the new Gen Samsung Netbooks with the latest Atom procs in a couple weeks seeing as they are only £300ish so might look at using this for a play. It'll be inevitably running Backtrack or Arch i suspect in the end but this looks pretty for a dual boot.

Yeah grab one mate, you won't be disappointed. The kids' machine is a Sammy and it runs great. :D

Nice :) What model is it? I think the one i'm looking at are the new N230 ones (13 hours battery, scary).

I take it your running some variation of *nix on the Sammy right? :)

It's an old-ish (by netbook standards) Samsung NC10. Atom 1.6GHz x2, 1GB DDR2 RAM, 160GB hdd. It's running a dual boot between Windows 7 Ultimate and Jolicloud. Funny thing is, I only put Win7 on there for the kids. A few days later, any time I leave Windows running (updates etc) they go mental at me. "Oi! Put my Linux back on!!11!"

I think we can say that's a win... LOL Enjoy yours when you get it mate; 13 hours battery is ridiculous. :D I think we average about 4 out of the NC10.

Lol excellent - get the kids into Linux early - i like it! You done any tweaking on the Jolicloud? I'd be tempted to take apart my N230, installed a 4GB DIMM and setup /tmp to run in tmpfs to see if it speeds it up.

I had an early Acer Aspire One with the terrible SSD - so looking forward to getting a mechnical HDD based netbook finally :)
