Recommend me a sub

Also for people saying the Monolith is only good for movies and not for music, that's tosh. The Monolith is great with music, the subs timing is superb for a ported box and there's even the option to simply stuff a pair of socks into the port and it pretty much becomes an XLS400...
Who said the Monolith is no good for music?

Looking at the connections on the back of your amp you can run two active sub woofers from that amp. Which would make it a 7.2 rather than a 7.1.

I know, but it is marketed as a 7.1 amp, the Pioneer LX55 is market as a 7.2 amp.

It looks the same!

I think that is because the Centre Pre-Out is also a sub out. So if you pre-out the Centre then you are only left with 1 sub (a mono channel).

If you don't pre-out the centre then you have 2 sub pre-out, one stereo, one mono.

Am I right?

Therefore, I am thinking....I can actually get a stereo RCA connection sub and use either as my amp can output either. I have no intention of pre-out the centre.

I can't say with any certainty but it appears your amp is capable of outputting to stereo subs. You would also think an amp of that quality should offer the option.

If it doesn't? and I ordered the stereo RCA BK? lol would I be stuck ?

How come stuff like REL doesn't have this "problem"?

What colour should I get and should I get downward firing or side firing ?

Bearing in mind i have carpet, that lead me to believe that I should get a side firing one? Although a big black mesh on the side of light oak finish isn't very pretty to me but the glossy black finish is £50 more :( and do they scratch easily?

And the downward firing sub isn't as good on carpet.

Hmmmm decisions !

Sorry you've lost me there. 1 sub = mono, 2 sub = stereo if your amp has 2 outputs. Or you can split a signal and have 2x mono.

Not sure what you mean by REL not having this "problem"?

You could buy a granite plynth or similar to sit the sub on, don't cost much. Also the BK subs come with spikes which help a lot on carpet. Personally I'd get a downward firing woofer.

I have the light oak finish and it's high quality. My kids climb all over it, no scratches :)

I meaner ordering the BK, it let you choose stereo or mono. I am guessing if I pick the wrong one I am stuffed?

Actually, my bad, it is the interconnector they they ask what you want included. Stereo it is then, can always just use one lead.

It's talking about the lead, you want the mono connection lead. The stereo lead is so you can use the stereo connections for older amps, it doesn't mean it will make your single sub stereo.

Looking at the price, the monolith is only like £30 more???

Surely that is better value for money? Ill just stick it in the corner of the room out of the way.

Can a sub be too big?

That in piano black will look amazing, downward firing and use it as a table in the corner :p

Shame it takes like a month for delivery, will order tonight I think :)

Edit, actually, the monolith is too big, physically for the room I think, 600mm tall and 540mm on one end is much bigger than I liked. :/

If you don't want something big then the XLS200 is tiny, I couldn't believe how small it is. It weighs a ton though and goes louder than anything that size has any right to :)

The 400 might be a nice compromise between the Gemini/200 and the Monolith. It's pretty much 40x40x40cm which is the same as my outgoing Mordaunt Short MSW20 that kicked the bucket.

I think the 400 is the perfect size, shame the price isn't a bit lower, if i got the space I would go for the Monolith, but that is a beast, not just width but also height.

BTW, what on earth are in these things?

200 - 17kg
400 - 27kg !
Monolith - 47kg!!!!!!!!!!

47kg ! That is the weight of a adult female!

Maybe an adult female? :)

Would make for an interesting unboxing in the dark depths of January.

As long as she doesn't put a heeled shoe through the driver ;)

The 400 ordered in Light Oak, the sooner I order the sooner i can get it. And a bit odd that after i ordered it says "the system does not automatically send you an email"....that's comforting!

27kg though, i am going to fun moving that !

On a side note, was looking at a REL R205 on eBay that went for £315, that would've been nice and i would get that this week but no warranty and no idea how hard it has been driven.

Well a few people have told me now that I won't be disappointed with "settling" for the 400 so I am pretty chilled about it now. You should get an email from BK at some point just to remind you it is built to order and will probably be the 1st or 2nd week of January. Been so long without a sub for me (2 months ish) that I really can't wait and am holding off from watching a load of movies. :)

Who said the Monolith is no good for music?

It's a line commonly spouted by people who talk the talk but haven't actually got a clue. It's then commonly picked up by others and spread as gospel. I always make this point on any forum where people start along the lines of 400 for music and Monolith for movies. It's a bugbear of mine lol :)

Raymond, enjoy the sub. Now think about an Antimode when budget allows, especially of you're going to put it in a corner.
