Call me old fashioned but none of those sound much like trance to me :(

You're old fashioned. :p

One of the best things about trance is that it is an umbrella genre with loads of sub-genres.

Language is a sort of trance/electro mix, Bang The Drum and Vast Vision have a more varied bassline and percussive aspects, and Suddenly Summer is tech-trance.

Now everything has to be off-beat or rolling basslines with a synth lead akin to most Nukleuz Purple releases in the early 2000s to be trance. ;)

(until the dodgy dubstep bit at 5:20, would have been perfection otherwise!)

Oddly enough, it's the only aspect that makes the rather generic track in any way different to the other bosh-alongs you posted.

Maybe I'm just bored with that sound due to 15 years of listening to trance.

That reminds me though, 15 years seems to be a good amount to do a themed mix :D

My favourite track from each year since 1997.

Have to say I don't get the hype for porter robinson - language I find it mostly characterless with no real hooks - of his other tracks spitfire is fairly decent but I don't rate most.

I'm not too sure what controls my subjectivity, but usually I find if a track doesn't remind me of an older track, then I am more inclined to like it. Can't say the main riff of Language reminds me of anything, and I kinda like the vocal bit.

But then I'm finding the current releases from Mat Zo and Arty completely uninspiring, whilst other people go mad for them.

Looks like Zo's remix of Live Forever is going to be his best work for me.

Seriously, compare this:

To this:

Bleurgh!

Wasn't a criticism of your taste btw seen certain circles raving about Language like its the next step for the genre but to me it sounds distinctly average and fairly much a textbook example of the genre.

Both of those Mat Zo tracks sound uninspired to me - the first one sounds like something that would be played between 2 great tracks in a set and the 2nd is a good chillout track but begging for a remix.

It's fair enough, we all have different tastes. I too have been an avid fan of trance since the late nineties but it is fair to say I still like the original fast paced uplifting melodies more than any other.

I've tried to goto many trance nights with this slower big room house electro type trance and it really doesn't do anything for me. For me it lacks the emotion, melody and spiritualness that trance was all about!

However I did go to the John 00 Fleming 5 hour set @ Passion last week and it really did open my eyes to the slow underground trance he plays with progressive, psy, dark psy and techno with the odd uplifting anthem in there for good measure. I didn't leave the dancefloor for 5 hours and I was completely sober as I was driving so a massive thumbs up from me!

However went to ASOT Invasion @ Privilege in Ibiza this year with Armin, Orjan Nilsen, Markus Schulz & Shogun and pretty much hated the entire night. Slow farty bass electro music all night :(

J00F is a god, he and Astral Projection keep me glued to the dancefloor every time I see them :D
